Overgrown Ground in Youngstown, Cleared in One Pass
A Youngstown lot can go from mowed grass to a wall of honeysuckle, grapevine and briars in a few summers. Once the saplings get thicker than a mower can take, most owners stop trying. That is where a forestry mulcher earns its keep. One tracked machine cuts the brush and small trees where they stand and grinds them into mulch. You are left with open ground you can walk and mow, covered in shredded wood, with the stumps cut off at the surface.
Youngstown is close to home for us. Logan Earthworks is owner-operated and based in Farmdale, one county north, so Mahoning County jobs are in our own back yard. Jeff looks at the ground with you, shows you what the mulcher will handle, and gives you a free estimate. If part of the job needs an excavator or a dozer, we run those too and plan it in from the start.
The work that fits here is brush mulching on overgrown lots, old fields that have gone to autumn olive and multiflora rose, wooded lots that need opening up before a build, fence rows, trails and hunting ground on the edges of town. The full rundown of the method is on our forestry mulching service page. This page covers what is different about doing it here.

What Forestry Mulching Looks Like on Youngstown Ground
Side lots and empty lots that grew shut
Youngstown has far fewer people than it did in the steel years, and the open lots left behind grow in fast. Some of those lots end up with the neighbor next door, through a local land bank or a private sale. Many of them are full of tree-of-heaven, mulberry, grapevine and briars by the time they change hands. A mulcher can take one back to open ground quickly. One caution: a lot that once held a house can hide brick, block and old fence wire. We walk it first, because a mulching head and buried junk do not mix.
Flat on top, steep at the valleys
This is glaciated plateau country. The ice left a fairly even plain, and the Mahoning River and Mill Creek cut valleys down through it. So most ground here is flat to rolling and easy to work, and then it drops off hard at a ravine. Lots that back up to the wooded slopes near Mill Creek Park are a good example. A tracked mulcher handles a fair amount of slope, but we take a steep bank slowly and leave the roots in place so the soil stays put. We also stay on your side of the line, so know where your pins are.
Clay that holds water into June
A lot of Mahoning County sits on glacial till that drains slowly. The USDA describes the Mahoning soil series as somewhat poorly drained, with water perched within a foot of the surface from October through June in most years. That matters for timing. Tracks spread the weight of the machine, but saturated clay still ruts. The best window on wet ground is a dry stretch in late summer or fall, or a hard freeze in winter. Higher, better drained lots can be worked most of the year. One walk tells us which kind you have.

How much does forestry mulching cost per acre in Youngstown, Ohio?
Jeff looks at your ground before he prices it, because two acres here can be two very different jobs. Price moves with how thick the growth is, how big the trees are, slope, wet ground, how the machine gets in, and what is hidden in the brush, like wire or an old foundation. Small city lots are often priced by the job, not the acre. Our forestry mulching cost guide explains each factor. The estimate is free.
How many acres can a forestry mulcher clear in a day around Youngstown?
It depends on what is growing. In light brush on flat, open ground a mulcher can cover several acres in a day. In thick saplings, grapevine and multiflora rose, or on a slope, one acre can take most of the day. A grown-in city lot is usually well under an acre, so it is a smaller job. Ask about timing when Jeff looks at the ground.
What are the downsides of forestry mulching on a Youngstown lot?
Roots and stumps stay in the ground, cut off near the surface. That holds the soil, but if you plan to dig a foundation on that spot the stumps have to be pulled with an excavator. Honeysuckle, tree-of-heaven and autumn olive will sprout back from the roots unless you mow or treat the regrowth. The finish is a rough layer of shredded wood, not a lawn. And lots with buried brick, block or wire take longer.
Can I burn brush on my lot in Youngstown instead of mulching it?
Check with Ohio EPA and the fire department before you light anything. Ohio EPA's open burning rules treat the land inside a city, plus a buffer zone past the city line, as a restricted area, and the rules there are tight. Mulching skips the question. The brush is ground up where it stands, so there is no pile to burn and nothing to haul. For other work on the same property, see our Youngstown land clearing and excavation page.
