Yard Drainage & French Drains in Youngstown, OH

Standing water in a Youngstown yard usually means clay underneath and no place for the rain to go. We look at where the water comes from and where it can leave, then build the swale, French drain or regrade that gets it there.

Yard Drainage in Youngstown, OH

Why the water sits, and what moves it

You know the spot. It is still wet three days after the rain stopped. The mower sinks, the dog tracks mud in, and the grass along the foundation never dries. In the worst cases the water works toward the house and shows up in the basement. A soggy yard in Youngstown is rarely one problem. It is usually tight soil, a lot graded flat or backward, and roof water dumped right at the wall.

We start by watching how the water moves. Where does it come onto your lot, where does it collect, and where is the lowest proper place for it to leave. Then we pick the simplest fix that works. Often that is regrading so the yard falls away from the foundation, with a shallow swale to carry the runoff. Where water moves through the soil, a French drain, a trench with perforated pipe bedded in stone, picks it up below the surface.

Bigger problems get bigger tools: an open ditch along the back line, a culvert under a drive that has been damming water, or a regrade of the whole yard. We cover the options on our French drains and yard drainage page. Our work is the ground outside the house, where most of that water starts. Logan Earthworks is owner-operated and based in Farmdale, so Mahoning County is close to home.

Drainage in Youngstown and Mahoning County

Soil that does not let water through

The ground is the first reason. Glacial till heavy in silt and clay covers most of Mahoning County. The USDA rates the Mahoning soil series, found across northeastern Ohio, as somewhat poorly drained, with a seasonal water table that can sit six to twelve inches down from October through June. Rain does not soak into that. It runs across the top or it sits. So a drainage fix in Youngstown has to move water sideways to an outlet, on the surface, in a pipe, or both.

What the Soil and Water District says

The Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District puts out a homeowner sheet on drainage around the home. It says every dwelling should have grading that controls surface runoff on the lot, that a drainage swale should sit at least ten feet from the house and slope to carry water away, and that subsurface drains are at least four inches across and surrounded with gravel or sand. That makes the District a useful stop for Youngstown homeowners with drainage questions. Ask what help it offers before you spend money.

Hills, valleys and the next yard over

Youngstown sits in the Mahoning River valley, and Mill Creek cuts its own valley through the city, so many yards lie at the bottom of somebody else's hill. Water arriving from uphill has to be caught and steered around the house, not just drained after it pools. Where it leaves matters as much. The District's sheet says water should enter and leave your property where it did before any construction. So the outlet belongs on your own ground or in a proper ditch, never aimed at the neighbor's foundation.

Youngstown Yard Drainage Questions

Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff.

Who do I call for yard drainage issues in Youngstown, Ohio?

For water standing in the yard or running toward the house, call an earthwork contractor who does grading and drainage. That is us, at (330) 625-5754. Jeff looks at where the water comes from and where it can leave. For an outside opinion, ask the Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District what help it offers. Our drainage solutions page lists what we handle.

How much does it cost to put drainage in a yard in Youngstown?

Every yard is different, so the price comes from a look at yours. The number depends on how far the water has to travel to an outlet, how much regrading is needed, how many feet of drain go in, and how easy it is to get a machine into the yard. Our French drain and yard drainage cost guide explains each factor. Estimates are free.

Can a neighbor drain water onto my property in Youngstown, Ohio?

Ohio State University's farm law program explains that Ohio follows a reasonable use rule: a landowner may change how surface water flows, but only in ways that are reasonable. A Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District fact sheet says no government agency has authority to settle drainage disputes between neighbors, and that serious ones are often decided in court. For legal advice, talk to an attorney. We can fix the drainage on your side.

Will a French drain work in Youngstown clay soil?

It can, if it is built for clay. The trench needs steady fall, clean stone around the pipe and a real outlet at the low end. In heavy clay, water reaches the drain slowly, so surface grading and swales often do more of the work and the French drain handles what is left. Jeff will tell you which mix fits your yard.
