Stump Grinding in Youngstown, OH

Stumps Gone After the Tree Work Is Done

The tree crew left, and the stumps stayed. That is how many Youngstown stump problems start. A tree service takes down a dead ash or a storm-damaged maple, and the price did not include the stump. Now it sits in the yard where the mower finds it, or it sends up a ring of shoots every spring. We bring a tracked machine with a stump grinding head and chew the stump down below ground level.

Youngstown is close to home. Logan Earthworks is based in Farmdale, in Trumbull County, and Mahoning County is home ground for us. The business is owner-operated, and Jeff gives free estimates. For one or two stumps, a few photos and a rough width are often enough to price it. For a lot full of stumps we come look, because size, count, access and what you plan to do with the ground afterward all change the approach.

We grind single yard stumps, rows of stumps left along a line, and dozens at a time on cleared ground. On a lot headed for a house or garage, grinding is not always the right call, and we will tell you when the stumps should be dug out. Details on the method are on our stump grinding service page. If the trees are still standing and dead or leaning, start with hazard tree removal.

Stump Grinding on Youngstown Lots

After the tree service leaves

Many tree bids cover dropping the tree and cleaning up the wood. The stump is extra, or not offered at all. We pick up from there. The grinding head works back and forth across the stump and the big surface roots until everything is below the grass line. What is left is a low mound of wood chips mixed with soil. Rake it level, pull the extra chips for a flower bed, add topsoil and seed it. The spot settles over the first year as the chips break down, so expect to top it off once.

Side lots, empty lots and rows of stumps

Youngstown has many open lots, and some of them are bought by the neighbor next door through a land bank or a private sale. Those lots can come with something nobody asked for: stumps from trees cut when the house came down, plus volunteer trees that have grown up since. Multiple stumps are where a machine like ours makes sense, because one trip takes care of the whole lot. We check for old footers, brick and pipe first. A lot that held a house rarely has clean dirt, and grinder teeth do not like masonry.

Clay, wet holes and buried lines

Much of Mahoning County is slow-draining glacial till, and a ground-out stump hole in clay can hold water like a bowl. Mixing the chips with soil and leaving the fill a little high keeps it from turning into a soft spot. Before any grinding, buried lines have to be marked. Ohio law says to contact OHIO811 at least two working days before digging, and we treat grinding below the surface as digging. A stump in the strip between the sidewalk and the street may be the city's to deal with, so call Youngstown city offices before you pay to have it ground.

Youngstown Stump Grinding Questions

Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff.

How much does stump grinding cost in Youngstown, Ohio?

It depends on the stump, so Jeff prices it once he has seen it. The width of the stump at ground level is the biggest factor, followed by how many there are, how far the surface roots run, whether the machine can reach them, and rock or junk in the soil. Several stumps done in one trip are easier on the budget than the same stumps done one at a time. Send photos or call for a free estimate.

How deep do you grind a stump, and can I grow grass over it in Youngstown?

We grind below ground level, deep enough that the spot can be covered with soil and seeded. Tell us what is going there. Lawn needs less depth than a new tree or a garden bed. Grindings alone make poor soil for grass, so plan on topsoil over the top. On the clay common here, leave the fill a little high, because it will settle.

Should stumps be ground or dug out before building on a Youngstown lot?

Under a house, garage, pad or driveway, dug out. Grinding leaves the roots and buried wood, which rot and let the ground settle. That is fine under grass and bad under a slab or a stone base. We run excavators as well as the grinder, so we can pull the stumps in the footprint and grind the ones in the yard. Our lot clearing page covers that kind of job.

Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding in Mahoning County?

Yes, the lines need to be marked first. Ohio law calls for contacting OHIO811 at least two working days before digging. The utilities mark their own lines. They do not mark private ones, such as an invisible dog fence, yard lights or a line to a shed, so tell us where those run. If the stumps are part of a bigger project, our Youngstown land clearing and excavation page lists the rest of what we do.
