Gravel Driveway Installation & Repair in Youngstown, OH
A load of gravel dumped on a Youngstown yard is not a driveway. We strip the topsoil, build a stone base, crown it and give the water a place to go, so the stone has something solid under it.
What a driveway contractor does that a load of stone does not
Plenty of people around Youngstown have tried the quick way. Order a truckload, spread it with a tractor, and enjoy it until spring. Then the stone sinks into the mud, the low spot by the road turns into a pond, and the ruts come back deeper than before. The stone was fine. What was missing is everything that goes under it and beside it.
When we build a gravel driveway we start with the route: where it meets the road, where the water runs, what has to come out of the way. Then the topsoil comes off, because black dirt and sod never pack. We cut the drive to shape, place a base of larger angular stone, build a crown so rain runs to the sides, cut ditches or swales to carry it off, set a culvert where the drive crosses a ditch, and finish with a top stone that locks together.
We also fix drives that were never built right. Regrading pulls the stone back out of the ditches and puts the crown back. Resurfacing adds top stone where the base is still good. Widening gives you room for a second vehicle or a turnaround. Beyond the house drive, we build private roads and farm lanes the same way. We are based in Farmdale, so this is close to home. See our driveway installation and repair page.

What goes into a gravel driveway we build
- Route laid out with drainage in mind
- Topsoil and sod stripped off
- Angular stone base placed and packed
- Crown shaped to shed water
- Ditches, swales and culverts where needed
- Top stone spread and finished
Gravel driveways on Youngstown and Mahoning County ground
Clay under the stone
Glacial till heavy in silt and clay covers most of Mahoning County. The USDA says the Mahoning soil series, widespread in northeastern Ohio, can carry a perched water table six to twelve inches below the surface from October through June. That is why gravel disappears around Youngstown. Wet clay pumps up through thin stone every time a tire rolls over it. A drive here needs the soft topsoil gone, enough base to bridge the clay, and ditches that pull the water down and away from the edges.
City lots, long lanes and steep ground
Inside Youngstown gravel work tends to be short: a parking pad, or a drive back to a garage. Outside the city the lanes get long and the water problems get bigger. Ground near the Mahoning River and the ravines around Mill Creek Park drops fast. A drive on a grade needs its water turned off the surface before it picks up speed and cuts a channel down the middle. We shape the crown and the ditches for the slope you have.
New entrance onto a road: who to ask
A new driveway entrance is not only your decision. On a state route, the Ohio Department of Transportation says driveway access in its right-of-way requires a permit, and its District 4 covers Mahoning County. On a county road, the Mahoning County Engineer issues a driveway permit for residential driveway installation or replacement inside the county right-of-way. Inside city limits start with the City of Youngstown, and on a township road ask the township. They decide where the entrance goes and what pipe sits under it. Get that answer before we build.

What is the cheapest way to build a gravel driveway in Youngstown?
The cheapest way that lasts is to build it once. Strip the topsoil, put down a real base, crown it and ditch it. Skipping those steps only saves money for one season. You can keep the bill down by choosing a short, straight route over ground that already drains and by building in dry weather. Our guide on how to build a gravel driveway that lasts shows each layer.
How much does a gravel driveway cost in Youngstown, Ohio?
The price follows the ground, so Jeff looks at yours first. Length and width matter most, then how much topsoil has to come off, how soft the ground is, whether a culvert is needed, and how far the stone has to be trucked. Our gravel driveway cost guide explains what you are paying for. Jeff gives free estimates after seeing the site.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway entrance in Youngstown or Mahoning County?
It depends on who owns the road. ODOT says driveway access in state highway right-of-way requires a permit. The Mahoning County Engineer issues driveway permits for county roads. City streets go through the City of Youngstown and township roads through the township. Call the office for your road before the work is scheduled.
Can you fix a rutted gravel driveway in Youngstown instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the base under the ruts is still firm, we regrade to pull the stone back to the middle, restore the crown, open the ditches and add fresh top stone. If the ruts are mud all the way down, that stretch gets dug out and rebuilt with new base. Jeff can usually tell which one you have in a short visit.
