Land Clearing & Excavation in Cortland, OH
A wooded lot off the lake that needs a house site. A back yard that stays soggy into June. A driveway that washes out every spring. Cortland is close to home for Logan Earthworks, and these are the kinds of jobs we do all year.
Clearing, Mulching & Dirt Work in Cortland
Cortland sits on the east shore of Mosquito Creek Lake, with Mosquito Lake State Park along the water. It is a small city with country all around it. In town the lots are close and the trees are big. Just outside town, in Bazetta, Mecca, Fowler and Johnston townships, it turns to fields, woodlots and long gravel lanes. We are based in Farmdale, a few townships to the northeast, so this part of Trumbull County is our own back yard.
The needs here are pretty steady. Clearing a lot for a new build. Mulching brush off the back of a property. Digging for a foundation, a utility trench or a pond. Fixing a yard or drive that holds water. We have separate pages if you want detail on one of them: forestry mulching in Cortland, our Cortland excavating contractor page and gravel driveways in Cortland.
Everything here drains to the lake
Storm water in the City of Cortland runs toward Mosquito Lake or Mosquito Creek. So does a lot of the township land around it. The lake is a flood control reservoir the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished in 1944, and the north end is a waterfowl refuge. When we clear or dig here we keep that in mind. We leave cover on slopes, keep disturbed dirt to what the job needs, and shape the grade so water leaves slowly instead of cutting a gully toward the ditch.
Flat clay lots and standing water
Much of the ground around town is flat with clay underneath, and water has nowhere to go. You see it as a wet strip along the back line, a yard that squishes, or a drive with a pond in the middle after rain. The fix depends on where the water can be sent. Sometimes it is regrading the yard so it falls away from the house. Sometimes it is a swale, a French drain or a new culvert under the drive. The outlet has to be found first, because a drain with no outlet is just a buried pipe.
The conservation district is in town
The Trumbull Soil & Water Conservation District has its office in Cortland. That makes it easy to ask questions before a project. If you are building, adding a pond or changing how water crosses your land, call them and the city or township zoning office first. For clearing, a Trumbull County lot inside city limits cannot have its brush burned under Ohio EPA rules, which is one more reason mulching fits here.

More about our work in Cortland
Who does land clearing and excavation in Cortland, Ohio?
Logan Earthworks does both. We are an owner-operated contractor based in Farmdale, in the same county, and Cortland is close to home for us. We clear lots, mulch brush, dig foundations, ponds and trenches, fix drainage and build gravel drives. Call (330) 625-5754 and Jeff will come look. The estimate is free.
Can I burn brush from clearing my lot in Cortland, Ohio?
Inside the city, plan on no. Ohio EPA does not allow land clearing waste to be burned in a restricted area, and that includes all land inside a city. Township land outside the buffer needs written permission from Ohio EPA first. Check with the Cortland fire department too. Forestry mulching leaves nothing to burn.
Why does my yard near Mosquito Lake in Cortland stay wet?
Most often it is flat ground over clay with no place for the water to drain. Roof water and runoff from higher lots add to it. We look for the low point and an outlet, then regrade, cut a swale or put in a French drain to carry the water there. Not sure if your water problem is something we take on? Reach out and ask.
