Demolition and Removal in Cortland, OH
Cortland is where the farm townships meet the lake, and the buildings in the way are old barns, cottage sheds and mobile homes on lots that are about to get a new house. Jeff takes them down, hauls the debris and leaves the ground ready. Farmdale is fifteen minutes up the road.
Demolition in Cortland
A growing town on the edge of farm country
Cortland sits on the east side of Mosquito Lake in Trumbull County, with Bazetta Township wrapped around it. While the river towns to the south lost people, Cortland gained them. Subdivisions went in on what used to be fields, and the lake shore filled with year-round houses where cottages used to stand.
That is what makes demolition here different from Warren or Niles. The job is less often a tired garage on an alley and more often a barn on a split-off lot, a cottage shed on the water, or a mobile home that a new house is replacing. The building is in the way of something, and it needs to be gone before the next thing can start.
The barn on the lot you just bought
When a farm along the township roads is split into building lots, the barn, the corn crib and the implement shed usually end up on one of them, and usually on the best spot. A barn that has stood empty for twenty years is rarely worth saving, and it is never cheap to brace up.
Jeff pulls it down with the excavator in an order that keeps the frame from dropping where it should not, sorts the debris and hauls it off. The foundation, whether it is stone, block or a poured wall, comes out with it so nothing is left to find with a basement dig later. The land prep guide covers what else goes into getting a lot ready.
Lake lots and the cottage shed
The shoreline around the lake started as summer places, and the sheds, boat sheds and lean-tos that came with the cottages have outlived most of the cottages. Lake lots are tight: a short drive, neighbors close on both sides, and the ground falling toward the water.
The compact track loader is the machine for these. It fits down a cottage drive, turns in a small yard and carries the debris up to the truck at the road instead of backing a loaded truck toward the shore. The land at the water's edge around the reservoir is federally managed, so stay on your own side of the line and ask before any fill goes near it.
Mobile homes, pools and what comes after
Mobile homes on rural lots around Cortland get replaced with houses, and the old unit has to go first. It is taken apart, hauled, and the pad or the piers under it pulled out. Above-ground pools in the subdivisions come out the same way, deck and sand ring included, with the low spot filled and graded.
Afterwards the ground is shaped so it drains. Bazetta clay holds water like the rest of the county, and a footing hole left open is a pond by April. If the lot needs more than grading, yard drainage in Cortland is the next step. If the lot is overgrown as well, forestry mulching clears the brush on the same trip.
Permits, locates and who to ask
Inside the city, start with City Hall on North High Street, which handles Cortland's planning and zoning. For lots out in Bazetta Township, the township zoning office is the first call. On the building side, the Trumbull County Building Inspection Department enforces the county code on demolition and lists tearing down any structure among the jobs that need a permit, so ask which office applies to your address.
OUPS (Ohio 811) marks the buried lines before any digging, which Ohio law requires. Old farm buildings sometimes still have a live line that nobody remembers, so the utility disconnects anything running to the building before it moves. Houses and buildings that need asbestos abatement are not part of this work; the main demolition page explains the line.
Fifteen minutes from the yard, one price
Cortland is the closest town to Farmdale in the regular run, which makes a single shed or one barn easy to fit in between bigger jobs. Jeff comes out, looks at the building, the way in and what is underneath, and gives one figure with the hauling and the grading in it. There is nothing added for the drive.
If a gravel drive to the new house or a pad for a pole barn is next, it is priced in the same visit. Everything else done around town is on the Cortland page.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff, or read the guides.
Do I need a permit to tear down a barn in Cortland?
Probably. The Trumbull County Building Inspection Department lists tearing down any structure among the jobs that need a permit, and the city or Bazetta Township will have a zoning question as well. Ask City Hall on North High Street or the township office before a date is set.
Can you get to a shed on a lake lot?
Usually. The compact track loader fits down most cottage drives and turns in a small yard. Debris is carried up to the truck at the road rather than driving a loaded truck down toward the water. Jeff looks at the drive and the neighbors' lines before he gives a number.
What about the stone foundation under an old barn?
It comes out with the barn. Stone, block or poured, the foundation is dug out and hauled so nothing is left for a basement excavation to find later. The hole is filled with material that compacts and graded so the lot drains.
Will you remove a mobile home so a house can go on the lot?
Yes. The unit is taken apart and hauled, and the pad or piers under it are removed. Any utilities running to it have to be disconnected by the utility first. Once it is gone the lot can be graded for the new foundation or the drive.
