Demolition and Removal in Boardman, OH

Boardman's subdivisions were built in the decades when every backyard got a pool, a deck and a shed, and those are the things wearing out now. Jeff takes them down with the machine, hauls the debris and grades the yard back so it drains. He comes down from Farmdale, about 40 minutes.

Demolition in Boardman

The backyard that came with the house

Boardman is the biggest township in Mahoning County, the suburb south of Youngstown that filled in from the 1950s through the 1980s. The streets off Route 224 and Market Street are ranches, split-levels and colonials on quarter-acre lots, and most of them have an attached garage, so the old alley garage is not the job here.

The job in Boardman is what a previous owner put in the backyard. An above-ground pool that has had its last season. A deck off the back door that an inspector flagged. A shed on a slab in the corner, a dog run, a patio that has heaved. Smaller pieces than a barn, but they still need a machine, a truck and somewhere for the debris to go.

Pool season is over

Above-ground pools are the most common call in Boardman. When the wall rusts through or the liner goes for the third time, the whole thing has to come out: deck, wall, liner, pump pad, and the ring of sand that was leveled under it. Taking that apart by hand is a long weekend; with the excavator it is a morning.

What is left is a round low spot in the clay, and Boardman clay holds water. The bowl is filled with material that packs, then graded so rain runs off toward the rest of the yard. Skip that step and the spot where the pool was becomes the puddle that never dries. The standing water guide explains why grading comes first.

Getting a machine into a subdivision yard

Most Boardman backyards are reached through a gap beside the house that is a fence panel wide. A full-size excavator does not fit, and tearing up the lawn to get there defeats the point. The compact track loader and a small excavator do, and the debris is carried out to the truck in the drive.

Jeff looks at the side yard, the gate, the neighbor's fence and where the truck can park before he gives a number. Decks and sheds come apart from the open side and are loaded as they go, so the pile never sits on the lawn for long. Mats go down where the ground is soft.

Mill Creek and the low streets

Mill Creek runs north through Boardman on its way to the Mahoning, and the streets near it, and near the smaller creeks that feed it, are the ones that flood. Stormwater in the township is handled through the ABC Stormwater District, and lots along the creek can sit in mapped floodplain.

That matters for demolition in one way: what can be brought in as fill. A pool bowl or a footing trench on a floodplain lot may need a question answered before it is filled. On the rest of the township it is a matter of grading. If the yard was already wet, yard drainage in Boardman is the next conversation.

Township zoning, county building permits, OUPS

Boardman Township's Planning and Zoning Department is at the Government Center on Market Street, and it takes permit applications through its online portal or a drop box. Building permits for the township run through Mahoning County Building Inspection. Ask zoning first; they will tell you whether a shed or a pool removal needs anything filed, and whether the county has to be involved.

Gas, electric and water lines get marked through OUPS (Ohio 811) before the digging starts; that call is Ohio law. A pool pump and a shed often have power run to them, so the utility or an electrician disconnects that before anything moves. Houses are not part of this work; the main demolition page draws the line.

What goes back where the shed was, and the price

Once the shed, pool or deck is gone, there is a slab, a sand ring or a set of post holes to deal with. The concrete comes out with the rest, and that side of the work is on the concrete removal page. The void is filled, compacted and graded, and topsoil goes on if the spot is going back to lawn. If a gravel pad for a trailer or a new shed is the plan, the base goes in while the machine is there.

Jeff gives one figure after seeing the yard, with the hauling and the grading in it. The rest of what he does in the township is on the Boardman page.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Above-ground pools. Deck, wall, liner, pump pad and sand ring removed, and the bowl filled and graded.
  • Backyard decks. Rotten or condemned decks taken apart from the open side, loaded and hauled.
  • Sheds on slabs. Metal and wood sheds and the slab under them cleared from the corner of the yard.
  • Patios and dog runs. Heaved patios, kennels and old slabs broken out, with the ground left level and mowable.
Boardman and nearby

Boardman and the towns nearby

Boardman is the south end of the territory, and the suburbs around it have the same backyards. The same pool and deck work runs north into Youngstown, west into Canfield and Austintown, and east through Poland and Struthers. Farmdale is about 40 minutes north, and a single pool gets the same visit as a barn and two slabs. Every town in the run is listed on the service area page.

Do I need a permit to remove a pool or shed in Boardman?

Ask Boardman Township's Planning and Zoning Department at the Government Center on Market Street before a date is set. They take applications online or through a drop box, and they can say whether Mahoning County Building Inspection needs to be involved. Rules differ for a shed, a pool and a deck.

Can you get a machine into my backyard?

Usually. Most Boardman yards are reached through the gap beside the house, and the compact track loader or a small excavator fits where a full-size machine does not. Jeff looks at the gate, the side yard and the neighbor's fence before quoting, and mats go down on soft ground.

What happens to the sand under the pool?

It comes out with the pool, or it is mixed into the fill if it is clean. Either way the round low spot is filled with material that compacts, then graded so water runs off toward the rest of the yard. On Boardman clay, that grading is what keeps the old pool spot from staying wet.

My street is near Mill Creek. Does that matter?

It can. Lots along Mill Creek and the smaller creeks can sit in mapped floodplain, which affects what fill can be brought in. Ask the township zoning office or the ABC Stormwater District before the hole is filled. Most Boardman yards are well above the creek and need only grading.

What does it cost to remove a deck or a pool in Boardman?

It depends on the size, what is under it and how the machine gets into the yard. Jeff comes out, looks, and gives one number with the hauling and the grading included. Estimates are free. Call (330) 625-5754.
