Demolition and Removal in Austintown, OH

Austintown's streets were built in a hurry after the war, and the garages, carports and sheds that went up with them are reaching the end at the same time. Jeff pulls them down, hauls the debris and grades the flat ground so it drains. He comes down from Farmdale, about 35 minutes.

Demolition in Austintown

Postwar streets on level ground

Austintown is the township west of Youngstown, strung along Mahoning Avenue with I-80 across the top of it. Most of it was built between the 1950s and the 1970s: ranches and Cape Cods on flat lots, a lot of them with a detached garage or a carport added later when the second car arrived.

Seventy years on, those add-ons are the problem. The carport posts have rusted at the ground, the garage slab has cracked and the roof has followed, the metal shed has lost its door. Austintown lots are flat enough that nothing drains on its own, so what gets left behind when a building comes down matters as much as the building.

The carport and the second garage

The most common call in Austintown is a carport or a single detached garage that a previous owner put up beside the drive. Aluminum carports fold under a heavy snow. Block garages built on a thin slab heave and crack. Either way, the thing is leaning toward the neighbor's yard.

Jeff takes it down with a machine sized to the gap beside the house, loads the debris as it comes apart and hauls it. The slab and the footings can go in the same visit, and the hole is filled and compacted so the spot does not settle. Any power run to the garage is disconnected by the utility first.

Pools, decks and sheds

Behind the ranches are the pools, decks and sheds of the families who raised kids here. An above-ground pool that has rusted through comes out with its deck, wall, liner, pump pad and the sand ring under it. A deck that an inspector flagged comes apart from the open side. A shed is loaded in an hour.

The sand ring from a pool is a shallow bowl in the clay, and on Austintown's flat ground it will hold water every spring if it is left. It gets filled with material that packs and graded with a small fall toward the rest of the yard. The 811 guide covers the locate call that comes before any of this digging.

Township zoning and the county

Austintown Township's Zoning Department at the township offices on Ohltown Road handles zoning permits, and its application form lists sheds, detached garages, above-ground pools, carports, porches, decks and fences by name. That is the office to ask about what needs filing before a building comes down, and whether anything is going back in its place.

The township points to Mahoning County Building Inspection for the building side, so some jobs are a two-office question. Buried gas, electric and water lines are marked through OUPS (Ohio 811) before any digging, and Ohio law requires the call. Houses and buildings that need asbestos abatement are not this work; the main demolition page explains where the line is.

Flat ground and the finished grade

Mahoning County clay drains slowly, and Austintown has less natural fall than almost anywhere in the Valley. A footing trench or a pool bowl left as a hole fills with water and stays that way. So the void is filled in lifts, compacted and graded so rain runs toward the swale or the side yard instead of sitting in the old footprint.

If the yard was wet before the building came down, yard drainage in Austintown is the next conversation. If the garage spot is becoming parking, a gravel pad can be based while the machine is there. A stump where the yard tree used to stand is handled by stump grinding.

One price with the hauling in it

Jeff comes out, looks at the building, the way in and what is underneath, and gives one figure. The hauling and the grading are in it, so there is no second bill for the debris and no surprise when the slab turns out to be thicker than it looked. A single carport gets the same visit as a garage and a pool together.

Austintown is about 35 minutes from Farmdale down Route 46 and I-80, and it is regular territory. Everything else done in the township is on the Austintown page.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Carports and add-on garages. Folded carports and cracked block garages beside the drive pulled down, loaded and hauled.
  • Above-ground pools. Pool, deck and sand ring removed, and the bowl filled and graded so it does not hold water.
  • Decks and sheds. Flagged decks and worn-out metal sheds taken apart from the open side and cleared.
  • Slabs and footings. The concrete under it broken out and the hole compacted so the flat ground still drains.

Austintown and the towns nearby

Austintown sits between the city and the farm townships, and the same garage and pool work runs both ways. East on Mahoning Avenue it is Youngstown, south on Route 46 it is Canfield, and north through Mineral Ridge it is Niles and the road home. Jackson and Ellsworth Townships to the west get the same visit. Farmdale is about 35 minutes north, and the drive does not change the price.

Do I need a permit to tear down a garage or carport in Austintown?

Ask the Austintown Township Zoning Department on Ohltown Road before a date is set. Its zoning permit form lists detached garages, carports, sheds, pools and decks by name, and the township points to Mahoning County Building Inspection for building permits. They will say what applies to your job.

Can you remove a carport that snow has already folded?

Yes. A carport that is half down is taken apart with the machine from a distance, so nobody is under it when the rest lets go. The posts are pulled, the footings dug out and the slab broken up if you want it gone. Then it is all loaded and hauled.

Will the spot where the pool was stay soggy?

Not if the bowl is filled and graded. Austintown is flat and the clay holds water, so a sand ring left as a low spot becomes a puddle every spring. Jeff fills it with material that compacts and shapes a small fall toward the rest of the yard. Topsoil and seed go on top if it is going back to lawn.

Is there enough room beside my house for a machine?

Usually. The gap beside a ranch is wide enough for a small excavator or the compact track loader, and the building is pulled toward the open side rather than pushed. Jeff looks at the gate, the fence and where the truck parks before he gives a number.

What does garage removal cost in Austintown?

It depends on size, material, what is under the floor and how the machine gets in. The estimate is done on site and free, and the number includes the hauling and the grading. Call (330) 625-5754.
