Demolition and Removal in Hermitage, PA
Hermitage is just over the state line, a spread-out city of suburban lots and old farm parcels in the Shenango Valley. The garages, sheds, pools and barns on them wear out the same as in Ohio. Jeff takes them down, hauls the debris and grades the ground back. Farmdale is about 30 minutes away.
Demolition in Hermitage
A township that became a city, and kept its lots
Hermitage is the biggest city in Mercer County by population, but it does not look like one. It was Hickory Township until the 1970s, and most of it is still suburban streets and former farm ground spread between Sharon on the Shenango River and the farm townships to the east. The lots are bigger than in the river towns, and the houses newer.
What people call about here is what a previous owner left in the yard: a two-car garage from the 1960s with a roof that has let go, an above-ground pool with its deck, a pole building from when somebody kept horses, a shed on a slab. On the older streets near Sharon the garages are tighter and the alleys narrower.
The pool, the deck and the sand ring
Hermitage's postwar streets have a lot of above-ground pools, and when the wall rusts through or the liner fails for the last time the whole thing has to come out. The deck is the part that stops people, because it is bolted and nailed in a way that takes a weekend to undo by hand.
With the machine it is a morning. Deck, wall, liner, pump pad and the ring of sand under it all come out together and are hauled. The round low spot that is left gets filled with material that packs and graded so rain runs off toward the rest of the yard. Left alone, it is the one place on the lot that never dries.
Garages, sheds and pole buildings
A detached garage comes down with the excavator in an order that keeps the rest from dropping where it should not, and the debris is loaded as it comes apart. The slab and the footings can go in the same visit, and that part is described on the concrete removal page. Metal sheds and carports go faster.
On the old farm parcels east of town, the job is a barn or a pole building, and the lots have room to work. The foundation is dug out with the building so nothing is left under the grass. Mobile homes on rural lots are taken apart, hauled and the piers pulled. Any line still run to the building is disconnected by the utility before it moves.
Hermitage's own demolition permit
The City of Hermitage runs its own building and inspection office under its Planning and Development department at the municipal building on North Hermitage Road, and it publishes a demolition permit application alongside its packets for detached accessory structures and swimming pools. The same page carries the Pennsylvania DEP asbestos abatement and demolition notification form, which tells you the state expects that question answered before a building comes down.
So the order is: ask the city what your job needs filed, settle the asbestos question, then set a date. Nobody but the city can confirm what a given lot needs, so that call comes first. Houses and anything needing abatement are a licensed demolition contractor's work, and the main demolition page explains that line.
PA One Call, not OUPS
Across the line the 811 center changes. In Pennsylvania buried lines are located through PA One Call, which also answers to 811, and state law requires the call before any digging. Jeff works both sides of the border, so the call is made to the right center for the address. The 811 guide covers how Ohio and Pennsylvania differ.
The ground does not change at the line. Mercer County clay holds water like Trumbull County clay, so a footing hole or a pool bowl is filled in lifts, compacted and graded with a fall. If the yard was wet already, yard drainage in Hermitage is the next conversation.
Thirty minutes from Farmdale, one price
Hermitage is regular territory, not a long trip, and the state line adds nothing to the price. Jeff comes out, walks the lot, checks what is under the building and gives one figure with the hauling and the grading in it. There is no second bill for the debris, and a single shed gets the same visit as a barn.
If a gravel drive or a pad for a new building is the next step, it is priced in the same visit. Everything else done in the city is on the Hermitage page.

Hermitage is the Pennsylvania end of the regular run, and the Shenango Valley around it gets the same work. The old steel town of Sharon is next door on the river, with its hillside streets and tight garages, and the farm townships east and north are covered on the Mercer County page. Back across the line, Hubbard is on the way home to Farmdale, about 30 minutes.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff, or read the guides.
Do I need a permit to tear down a garage in Hermitage?
Ask the City of Hermitage's building and inspection office at the municipal building on North Hermitage Road. The city publishes its own demolition permit application, along with packets for detached accessory structures and swimming pools. They will say what your job needs filed before a date is set.
What is the asbestos form on the city's permit page?
It is the Pennsylvania DEP notification for asbestos abatement and demolition. Sheds, pools and most garages are not what it is aimed at, but the state expects the question answered. Ask the city which buildings need it. Anything that needs abatement is a licensed demolition contractor's job, not this one.
Do you call 811 in Pennsylvania too?
Yes. On the Pennsylvania side buried lines are located through PA One Call, which answers to 811, and state law requires the call before digging. Jeff works both sides of the line, so the call goes to the right center for the address. The utility disconnects any live line to the building.
Can you remove an above-ground pool and its deck?
Yes. Once it is drained, the deck, wall, liner, pump pad and sand ring come out and are hauled. The low spot is filled with material that compacts and graded so it drains. Mercer County clay holds water, so that grading is the part that keeps the old pool spot from staying wet.
Does the state line change the price?
No. Hermitage is about 30 minutes from Farmdale and is regular territory. Jeff comes out, looks at the building and the lot, and gives one number with the hauling and the grading in it. Estimates are free. Call (330) 625-5754.
