Land Clearing & Forestry Mulching in Portage County, OH
You bought acreage in Portage County and half of it is brush you cannot walk through. Or the lot is wooded and the builder needs it open by spring. We clear it and leave it ready for what comes next.
Land Clearing, Mulching & Excavation in Portage County
Portage County borders Trumbull County, where we are based, and it is inside our service area. This is inside our service area, from Windham and Nelson on the east side over to Kent and Aurora. The county has 18 townships, and the land changes as you cross it. The west side around Kent, Streetsboro and Aurora is filling in with houses. The east and south, in townships like Paris, Palmyra, Deerfield, Edinburg and Atwater, are still fields and woods.
Our land clearing work covers both ends of that. A forestry mulcher takes down brush and small trees and leaves mulch on the ground. Excavators and a dozer take out the big trees and stumps where a foundation, a drive or a pond is going. Jeff will tell you which one your site needs after he sees it. For more on two of the towns, see Kent and Ravenna.
Two watersheds and a lot of reservoirs
Portage County is named for the old carrying path between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. Water here goes two ways, north to Lake Erie and south toward the Ohio River. The Mahoning River system reaches in from the southeast, and its West Branch is dammed east of Ravenna to form the Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir at West Branch State Park. So a lot of private land drains toward a public lake or a river. Before you clear a slope or a stream bank, ask the Portage Soil & Water Conservation District in Ravenna what they want to see for erosion control.
East side: farms, woodlots and the old arsenal
The east side of the county is the quiet side. Camp James A. Garfield, which many people still call the Ravenna Arsenal, takes in parts of Freedom, Windham, Charlestown and Paris townships. The private land around it is farm and timber. Nelson Township, up in the corner, has the rock ledges at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park, and rock can be close to the surface up there. Out this way we clear field edges, fence rows, hunting ground and house sites on long lanes. We bring the mulcher for the acreage and the excavator for the pad.
West side: lots between houses
Around Kent, Brimfield, Streetsboro and Aurora the jobs are smaller and tighter. A back lot grown up in buckthorn and honeysuckle. A wooded parcel split off for a new house. A strip along a commercial property line. Space is short, so we pick a machine that fits and plan where the trucks and trailers can sit. If your project opens up an acre or more for building, Ohio EPA's construction stormwater permit applies, and your city or township may want its own review. We work to the plan your builder and the local office have agreed on.

Do you clear land in Portage County, Ohio?
Yes. Portage County is next door to our home county and it is inside our service area. We clear wooded lots, mulch overgrown fields, cut fence rows and trails, and dig out stumps for building sites from Windham to Kent. Call (330) 625-5754 and tell Jeff where the land is. He will come out and give you a free estimate.
What is the difference between land clearing and forestry mulching on a Portage County lot?
Land clearing is the whole job of getting growth off a site. Forestry mulching is one way to do it: a machine grinds brush and small trees in place and leaves the stumps cut at ground level. Clearing for a foundation usually means an excavator pulling stumps and roots too. Many Portage County jobs use both on the same lot.
What does grubbing mean when clearing a building lot in Portage County?
Grubbing is digging out the stumps and roots after the trees are down, so nothing is left to rot under a foundation, slab or driveway. We do it with an excavator. If you only want a field or woods opened up, you may not need grubbing at all, and mulching will cost you less.
How many acres can a forestry mulcher clear in a day in Portage County?
It depends on the growth. Light brush in an old field moves quickly. Dense saplings, vines and four-inch trees slow the machine to a crawl, and so do wet ground, rocks and old wire. We would be guessing without seeing it. Jeff will look at your land and give you a free estimate.
