Clearing, Mulching & Dirt Work in Youngstown

Empty lots are part of the map in Youngstown. A house comes down, nobody mows, and in a few summers the lot is a wall of saplings, grapevine and briars with a stump or two hiding inside. The same thing happens on back acreage at the edges of the city. Logan Earthworks clears that kind of ground, digs and grades for whatever comes next, and leaves it clean. We are owner-operated, and this is close to home for us.

The city sits along the Mahoning River, and Mill Creek comes down through Mill Creek Park to meet it. Away from those valleys, the glaciers left a fairly even plain with tight subsoil. That makes for easy machine access and slow drainage. We bring a tracked forestry mulcher for brush and small trees, CAT excavators for digging and stumps, and a dozer and compact track loader for grade. For the townships around the city, see land clearing in Mahoning County.

Vacant lots and side lots

A Youngstown lot that has sat since the house was torn down is rarely just brush. Under the vines you can find brick, old footers, fence posts and tires. We walk it first, then pick the tool: the mulcher where it is clean growth, an excavator where there are stumps and junk to pull. If you know what stood on the lot, tell us, and we plan for it with you before the first cut. Whether the lot came through a land bank or a private sale, you end up with ground you can mow.

Why a burn pile does not work inside the city

Ohio EPA's open burning rule treats everything inside a city, plus a buffer zone beyond the line, as a restricted area, and burning land clearing waste is not on the list of fires allowed there. So a burn pile is off the table for most Youngstown jobs. Forestry mulching gets around it. One machine cuts and grinds brush and small trees where they stand and leaves the mulch on the ground to protect the soil. Nothing is piled, burned or hauled. More on our forestry mulching in Youngstown page. Ohio EPA is the office to check with on burning.

Digging, grade and water on flat clay ground

Mahoning County shares its name with a soil. USDA describes the Mahoning series as glacial till with a clayey subsoil, where water can sit perched within a foot of the surface from October through June. That is why yards here stay soft in spring and why a pad set dead flat turns into a puddle. We set grade so water leaves: fall away from the building, a swale to carry it, a French drain where one is needed. Ohio law requires notice to OHIO811 before any digging, at least 2 working days ahead. See yard drainage in Youngstown.

Questions

Youngstown Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Who do you hire to clear an overgrown lot in Youngstown, Ohio?

A land clearing contractor with the right machine for what is growing there. For brush, briars and small trees, a forestry mulcher is usually the shortest route because nothing has to be hauled. Bigger trees, stumps and buried junk call for an excavator. Logan Earthworks runs both, Youngstown is close to home for us, and estimates are free at (330) 625-5754.

Can I burn the brush after clearing land in Youngstown?

Plan on no. Ohio EPA's open burning rule sets a restricted area that covers land inside a city and a buffer zone around it, and burning land clearing waste is not one of the fires allowed there. Check with Ohio EPA and the city fire department before lighting anything. Mulching the brush in place avoids the question, because there is no pile left to burn.

How much does land clearing cost in Youngstown, OH?

It depends on what is growing, how thick it is, how big the trees are, how wet the ground is, how a machine gets in, and what you want left behind. A clean brush lot is a different job from one full of stumps and old foundation. We look at the site and give a free estimate. Our land clearing cost guide explains what moves the price.
