Excavating Contractor in Youngstown, OH

Digging and dirt work for Youngstown builds

Most excavation calls from Youngstown start the same way. A builder has a foundation to pour and nobody lined up to dig it. A homeowner wants a garage out back and the yard falls the wrong way. A shop owner needs a water line run across a lot. The job is dirt, and it has to be dug to a number, not close to it. That is the work Logan Earthworks does.

Logan Earthworks is owner-operated. Jeff looks at the site, talks the plan through with you and recommends how to dig it. We bring a tracked excavator for the digging, a dozer for pushing and shaping, and a compact track loader for tight spots and finish work. Our base is in Farmdale in Trumbull County, so Mahoning County is close to home for us, not a road trip.

Digging is the first step of the build. Your concrete crew sets the forms and pours the footers and walls, your plumber and electrician lay their lines in the trenches we open, and your builder takes it from there. Our part is to hand each of them a hole, a trench or a pad that is the right size and the right depth. The full list is on our excavation services page.

What digging in Youngstown and Mahoning County involves

Clay till on top, rock where the valley cuts

Glacial till covers most of Mahoning County. The USDA describes the Mahoning soil series, which is widespread in northeastern Ohio, as somewhat poorly drained ground formed in that till. For a dig in Youngstown that means two things. On flatter ground, expect clay that holds water in an open hole after a rain. Along the Mahoning River valley and the ravines that feed it, rock may be closer than you hoped. Both are worth planning for before the dig starts, along with where the spoil pile will sit.

City lots and open acreage are different jobs

Youngstown is the county seat and an old steel city, and a small part of it reaches into Trumbull County. A lot inside the city is usually tight, with neighbors close and utilities in the street, and an older lot can turn up fill or footings left by whatever stood there before. Past the city line the lots open up and the questions change to access, topsoil and where the water goes. Tell us which one you have. It changes the machine we bring and how we stage the dirt. Our Youngstown land clearing and excavation page covers the clearing side.

Call before you dig in Ohio

Ohio law puts the locate notice on the excavator. Revised Code section 3781.28 says the notice to the protection service, OHIO811, has to go in at least two working days before digging starts, not counting the day of the notice, and not more than sixteen calendar days ahead. The number is 811. Who places the notice gets sorted out when we look at the job, and the digging waits for the marks. Lines you own yourself, like the wire to a detached garage, may not get marked by the utilities, so walk us to anything you know is buried. Check OHIO811 for the current rules.

Youngstown Excavating Contractor Questions

What does an excavating contractor in Youngstown, Ohio actually do?

An excavating contractor moves and shapes the ground so something can be built on it or in it. For Logan Earthworks that means digging foundations and footer trenches, cutting and filling a building site, opening utility trenches, building pads and general earthmoving. Your concrete crew, plumber and electrician then work in the hole or trench we leave them. Not sure if your job is something we take on? Call and ask.

Do you dig basements in Youngstown if I already have a concrete crew?

Yes, and that is how we like to work. Your builder or concrete crew gives us the plan and the stakes. We dig the hole and the footer trenches to those numbers and keep the spoil where it is handy for backfill. They pour. Backfill and rough grade after the walls are up can be part of the job, and that gets settled in the estimate. Call early so the dig and the pour line up.

How much does excavation cost in Youngstown and Mahoning County?

Two holes the same size can be very different jobs, so Jeff prices each one after seeing the ground. What moves the number is how much dirt has to move, whether it stays on site, how a machine gets in, and whether we hit rock or water. Our guide on what drives an excavation quote explains each one. Estimates are free. Call (330) 625-5754.

Who calls 811 before digging on my Youngstown property?

Under Ohio law the notice has to come from the excavator, the one doing the digging. We sort out who places it when we look at the job. If you are doing your own digging, the call is yours. OHIO811 answers at 811. The notice has to be in at least two working days before the dig, not counting the day you call. Check OHIO811 for details before you plan a start date.
