Excavating Contractor in Greensburg, PA

Excavation and site work around Greensburg

Building in Westmoreland County means building on a hill. A house site gets benched into a slope, a pole barn needs a level pad on ground that falls away, and a driveway has to climb from the road without washing out. Before any of that, the footers, the trenches and the pad have to be dug right. That is the work we travel to Greensburg for.

Logan Earthworks is owner-operated and based in Farmdale, Ohio, so Greensburg is one of the farther places we go. We are straight about that. The jobs that make sense are the ones with enough work to justify bringing in tracked excavators, a dozer and a compact track loader: a home site from clearing to pad, a commercial site cut, or several days of trenching and grading. Jeff looks at the job, tells you plainly whether it fits a trip, and gives you a free estimate.

When the site is still in brush, we can do the clearing and the dig on the same trip. Our Greensburg land clearing and excavation page covers the clearing side.

Hills, old mines and Pennsylvania rules

Coal under the hills

Westmoreland County is coal country, and old underground mines sit beneath parts of it. Pennsylvania DEP estimates that more than 1,000,000 buildings in the state stand over abandoned mines, and it has said most of Rostraver Township, in Westmoreland County, is undermined. DEP runs a Mine Subsidence Insurance program for homeowners. If you are building, ask your engineer or DEP whether your lot sits over old workings before the footers go in.

Erosion plans and the Westmoreland district

Pennsylvania's Chapter 102 rules call for a written erosion and sediment control plan once earth disturbance reaches 5,000 square feet, and most projects need an NPDES permit at one acre. A house site with a drive gets past the first mark quickly. Westmoreland County's conservation district is the office to ask, and your municipality, whether Greensburg or Hempfield Township, may have grading rules of its own. Our clearing permits guide sets the rules side by side.

PA One Call before the bucket

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission says homeowners and contractors must call 811 at least three business days before digging. Whoever does the digging places the notice, and the PUC notes that marks can sit 18 to 24 inches from the actual line, so we dig by hand near the paint. Who calls gets settled when we look at the job. See our 811 guide.

Will you travel to Greensburg, PA just for excavation?

Sometimes. We are based in northeastern Ohio, so a Greensburg dig has to be big enough to justify the trip, or be paired with clearing or grading on the same site. A home site from clearing to pad, a commercial cut or several days of trenching usually fits. Tell Jeff what you have and he will tell you straight.

How do I know if my Westmoreland County lot is over an old coal mine?

Ask before you build. Pennsylvania DEP says more than a million buildings in the state stand over abandoned mines, and parts of Westmoreland County are undermined. DEP runs the Mine Subsidence Insurance program for homeowners, and a geotechnical engineer can study the site itself. We dig to the engineer's plan.

How early do I call PA One Call before digging in Greensburg?

At least three business days before the dig, according to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, and Pennsylvania 811 asks for no more than ten business days. Weekends and legal holidays do not count. If a contractor is doing the digging, the contractor places the notice. No digging starts until the lines are marked.

What should I send before you price excavation in Westmoreland County?

The address, a site plan or sketch, any engineer's report, and photos of the slope and the way in. Tell us if the lot needs clearing, where the dirt can go and when your builder wants to start. On a travel job those details decide whether one trip covers it. Then Jeff can give you a free estimate.
