Excavating Contractor in Akron, OH
Akron and Summit County are inside our service area. When a builder, homeowner or property manager there needs a hole dug right, a site cut to grade or a trench opened, Logan Earthworks brings the machines and does the digging.
Site digs and earthmoving in Akron
Hills make excavation harder and more important. A house on a slope needs a cut on the high side and fill on the low side, and both have to hold. A commercial pad needs to shed water without sending it next door. Akron has plenty of both kinds of jobs, and the difference between a good dig and a bad one shows up the first time it rains hard.
Logan Earthworks is an owner-operated outfit based in Farmdale, in northeastern Ohio. We work in the Akron area on excavation, site preparation and land clearing. You talk to Jeff, the owner, from the first phone call. No salesman in between. He looks at the ground, tells you how he would do it, and gives you a free estimate.
Our side of the job is the dirt: building site excavation, foundation digs, utility trenching, pads and general earthmoving. Concrete crews pour in the holes we dig. Plumbers and electricians lay their lines in our trenches. Backfill and grading after that can be part of the job, so the next trade has a clean site. If the lot is still grown up, we can handle lot clearing first.

What makes Akron digs different
A city named for its high ground
Akron takes its name from a Greek word meaning summit. The city sits on the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, with rolling hills and the Little Cuyahoga River running through it. For an excavator that often means a lot with some fall to it. We set the building pad height first, then figure the cut, the fill and where the extra dirt goes. On a hillside lot we also talk early about any wall or engineered slope, so your engineer's design is in hand before the cut starts.
Canal corridor and older neighborhoods
The Ohio and Erie Canal passes through Akron and splits the east side from the west. Older neighborhoods mean older buried lines. In the built-up parts of the city, a dig for an addition or a new garage comes with tight access, close neighbors and little room for a spoil pile. Those jobs call for a compact machine, a spoil pile that does not block the street, and slow work near anything buried. See our Akron land clearing and excavation page for the clearing side.
Ohio 811 and the one-acre rule
Two state rules come up on Summit County jobs. First is Ohio's call before you dig law. The excavator notifies OHIO811 by dialing 811 at least two working days before digging, not counting the notice day, and not more than sixteen calendar days out. Who places it gets settled when we look at the job. Second, Ohio EPA requires storm water permit coverage for construction that disturbs one acre or more, and for smaller pieces of a larger common plan of development. Builders and developers in Summit County usually have an engineer on that. Confirm both with the agencies.

Do you travel to Akron, Ohio for excavation work?
Yes. The Akron area is part of where we work. Logan Earthworks is based in Farmdale in Trumbull County and takes on excavation, site prep and land clearing across northeastern Ohio. Call Jeff at (330) 625-5754, describe the job, and he will talk it through with you. The excavation services page lists what we dig.
Can you excavate a sloped lot in Akron for a new house?
Yes. Sloped lots are cut-and-fill jobs. We cut the high side, use good dirt to build up the low side in layers, and shape the ground so runoff goes around the house. If the plan calls for a retaining wall or an engineered slope, we dig to your engineer's plan.
What is the difference between excavation and site preparation on an Akron build?
Excavation is the digging itself: the basement, the footers, the trenches. Site preparation is everything that gets the lot ready around that, such as clearing, stripping topsoil, rough grading, building the pad and setting up drainage. Most new builds need both, and we do both. Our site preparation page walks through the order.
Does excavating in Akron or Summit County need a storm water permit?
Ohio EPA says construction that disturbs one acre or more of land needs storm water permit coverage, and so do smaller pieces of a larger common plan of development. Below that size, local rules can still apply. Ask Ohio EPA and your city or county building office before the job is scheduled.
