Land Clearing, Mulching & Excavation in Trumbull County

Trumbull County is our own back yard. Logan Earthworks is based in Farmdale, up in Kinsman Township, and the ground between the Pennsylvania line and the Grand River is where we work most. The county is close to a perfect square. It has 24 townships, Warren in the middle as the county seat, and Mosquito Creek Lake running up the center. That leaves two kinds of land here: tight lots around Warren, Niles, Howland and Cortland, and big rural ground up north where old pasture and hedgerows have grown shut.

We clear both. On overgrown acreage we bring a tracked forestry mulcher that cuts brush and small trees and grinds them where they stand, so there are no piles to haul or burn. Where stumps and roots have to come out for a house, a barn or a driveway, we bring a CAT excavator and a dozer. Jeff looks at the ground with you first, then tells you which way fits. See how we work close to home in Kinsman and Farmdale, Cortland and Warren.

Flat glacial ground that holds water

Most of Trumbull County is glacial till plain: flat to gently rolling, with heavy clay under the topsoil. USDA describes the Mahoning soil series, which is mapped across northeastern Ohio, as somewhat poorly drained soil formed in glacial till. In plain terms, water sits here. That changes how land gets cleared. Tracks rut soft ground in a wet spring, and a lot stripped bare turns to mud. Mulching leaves a mat on the soil that carries the machine and slows runoff. Where we do dig, we plan the grade and the drainage on day one.

North end, south end and the lake in between

Across the north end the townships are farm and woods: Kinsman, Gustavus, Greene, Mecca, Bloomfield, Mesopotamia, Bristol. Jobs there run to fence lines, pasture taken back from brush, hunting ground and pond sites. The Grand River bottoms on the west side stay wet and wooded. Around Warren and south of it the work changes to house lots, infill and commercial frontage in places like Niles, Newton Falls and Brookfield, where there is less room to work and neighbors are close. We size the machine to the site.

Burning, digging and who to check with

A lot of people plan to pile and burn. Ohio EPA's open burning rules do not allow burning land clearing waste inside a restricted area, which covers every city and village plus a buffer around the bigger ones. Outside those areas it takes written permission from Ohio EPA ahead of time. Mulching skips the question. For digging, Ohio law has you contact OHIO811 at least two working days before you start. The Trumbull Soil & Water Conservation District office in Cortland helps landowners with drainage, ponds and erosion, and it is worth a call before a big project. Check each rule yourself, because they change.

Questions

Trumbull County Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Who do you hire to clear land in Trumbull County, Ohio?

You want a land clearing contractor with a forestry mulcher for brush and small trees and an excavator for stumps and big timber. Logan Earthworks runs both and is based in Farmdale, in the northeast corner of Trumbull County. Call (330) 625-5754, tell Jeff what the ground looks like, and he will come look at it. The estimate is free.

Can I burn the brush piles after clearing land in Trumbull County?

Maybe not. Ohio EPA says land clearing waste cannot be burned inside a restricted area, which includes all land inside a city or village and a buffer zone around larger ones. Outside those areas you need written permission from Ohio EPA first, and your township or fire department may add rules. Forestry mulching leaves no piles to burn at all.

How much does land clearing cost per acre in Trumbull County?

It depends on what is growing, how thick it is, how wet the ground is and what you want left when we are done. Light brush that a mulcher can walk through is the low end. Mature trees with stumps dug out and the ground graded is the high end. Jeff looks at the site and gives you a free estimate.

When is the ground dry enough to clear land in Trumbull County?

The clay here holds water, so late summer, fall and a hard winter freeze are the easiest times to get machines across a field without rutting it. Spring can work on higher ground. A tracked mulcher spreads its weight and rides on its own mulch, so we can often work when a wheeled machine could not. Call and we will look at your ground.
