Land Clearing & Forestry Mulching in Geauga County, OH

Geauga County is wooded, wet and mostly rural. Clearing here is about taking out the right growth and keeping the rest: the sugar maples, the topsoil, the look of the place. We do that with a forestry mulcher and a careful operator.

Land Clearing, Mulching & Excavation in Geauga County

The east side of Geauga County is close to home for us. Middlefield and Parkman townships sit right on the line with Trumbull County, where Logan Earthworks is based, and Huntsburg is just north of them. Chardon, Burton, Troy and the townships farther west are inside our service area. Most of the people here live outside a town, on a few acres or a few hundred. The usual jobs are brush closing in on a pasture, a wooded lot that needs a house site and a drive, or trails through a sugar bush.

A tracked forestry mulcher handles most of it. The machine cuts buckthorn, honeysuckle, multiflora rose and saplings and mulches them where they fall, and it works around the trees you want to keep. For stumps, building pads and driveways we bring an excavator, a dozer and a compact track loader. We have more detail for Middlefield and Chardon, and a page on forestry mulching in Chardon.

The wettest county in northern Ohio

Geauga County gets more precipitation than any other county in northern Ohio, and it sits in the primary Lake Erie snowbelt. The Cuyahoga, the Chagrin and the Grand River all start here. For a landowner that means the ground is soft for much of the year and every acre drains to somebody's headwater stream. We time jobs for dry or frozen ground when we can. A mulcher on tracks leaves the roots and a layer of mulch behind, which holds a slope much better than bare dirt pushed up by a dozer.

Farm ground around Middlefield and Parkman

Middlefield is the center of one of the largest Amish settlements anywhere, and the townships around it are working farm country: small fields, woodlots, pasture and a lot of fence. Fence rows are the common job. Left alone they turn into a strip of brush and grapevine that shades the crop and hides the wire. We mulch them back to the line and leave the trees you mark. We also open lanes into back woodlots and clear spots for a barn, a shop or a pond.

Wooded home sites and the conservation district

Much of Geauga County is wooded home sites on large lots. Clearing one often means a long driveway cut, a pad, and room for the septic contractor and the well driller to do their part. The Geauga Soil & Water Conservation District in Chardon lists residential sites, drainage, pond management and forestry among its programs, and its website has a permit section for residential and commercial sites. Call that office and your township zoning inspector before any soil is moved. We clear to the plan they approve.

Questions

Geauga County Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Do you offer forestry mulching in Geauga County, Ohio?

Yes. Middlefield, Parkman and Huntsburg are close to our base in Farmdale, and we work in Chardon, Burton and the rest of Geauga County. We mulch brush, invasive shrubs and small trees, clear fence rows and trails, and open up home sites. Call (330) 625-5754 and Jeff will come look at your land for free.

Can you clear a wooded lot in Geauga County and keep the big trees?

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons people here choose mulching. Walk the lot with Jeff and mark what stays. The mulcher takes the underbrush and small stems and works around the maples, oaks and beech you want. We stay off the root zones of keeper trees as much as the site allows.

What are the downsides of forestry mulching on Geauga County land?

It does not remove stumps below grade, so it is not the finish for a building pad or a lawn. Some brush, like buckthorn and honeysuckle, will sprout from the roots and needs a follow-up cut or treatment. The mulch layer takes a season or two to break down. For most acreage those are fair trades. We will tell you if your job needs digging instead.

Can you clear trails through a sugar bush or woodlot in Geauga County?

Yes. We cut trails and access lanes wide enough for the equipment you plan to run, and we leave the canopy trees alone. Tell us which trees are tapped or marked to keep. Winter and late summer are good times, when the ground will carry the machine without rutting between the trees.
