Opening Up Wooded Land Around Chardon
Snow is what people know Chardon for, but brush is what landowners fight. Geauga County gets more precipitation than any other county in northern Ohio, and all that water grows honeysuckle, buckthorn, multiflora rose and maple saplings as fast as you can cut them. On a wooded lot the understory soon turns into a wall. Forestry mulching opens it back up. One tracked machine cuts the brush and small trees and leaves them shredded on the ground.
We work in and around Chardon. Logan Earthworks is owner-operated and based in Farmdale, in Trumbull County, the next county east, so this is inside our service area. Jeff comes out and looks at the woods with you, and what stays and what goes is agreed before any machine starts. The estimate is free, and you will know what the ground should look like when we leave.
Work here leans toward wooded land: sugar bush and woodlots cleaned up under the good trees, trails, lot lines, old pasture, and house sites cut into the woods. If invasive brush is the main problem, our brush mulching page speaks to that. See the forestry mulching service page for the method and the Chardon land clearing and excavation page for site work.

What Is Different About Mulching in Chardon
Keep the maples, lose the brush
Chardon hosts the Geauga County Maple Festival on the square each spring, and woods around town are still tapped. A sugar bush only works if you can get to the trees. Honeysuckle, rose and saplings in the understory get in the way of the lines, the buckets and the people. A forestry mulcher is selective. It can work between the maples, take out the brush and the junk trees, and leave every tree you mark. Flag the ones that matter, and any tubing left in the woods, before we start. Tubing and a mulching head do not get along.
The snowiest city in Ohio
Chardon averages about 107 inches of snow a year, the most of any city in Ohio. That changes the calendar. In much of northeast Ohio, winter is a prime time to mulch, with frozen ground and no leaves. Here the snow is often too deep to see stumps, rocks and wire, and the spring melt leaves the ground soft for weeks. The dependable window runs from early summer into late fall. We do work in winter when the cover is thin and the ground is frozen, and we pick those days by looking at the ground.
High ground where three rivers start
Chardon sits at about 1,240 feet, and the headwaters of the Cuyahoga, Chagrin and Grand rivers are all in Geauga County. A property in Chardon, Hambden or Munson may well have a seep, a wet spot or a small stream on it somewhere. We keep the machine out of the wet ground, leave a strip of growth along running water, and let the mulch cover the soil everywhere else so rain soaks in. If you are not sure what you can clear near a stream, the Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District is the office to ask.

How much does forestry mulching cost per acre in Chardon and Geauga County?
Selective work in a woodlot is priced differently from open field clearing, so a single per-acre number would mislead you. The more trees we work around, the slower it goes. Density of the brush, slope, wet ground and access count too. Our forestry mulching cost guide lays out the factors, and Jeff will give you a free estimate after walking your woods.
How fast can a forestry mulcher clear a wooded lot in Chardon?
Slower than a field, because the machine is steering around trees you want kept. A wooded acre with heavy honeysuckle under it can take a day. Lighter understory goes quicker, and open pasture with scattered brush can go at several acres a day. Soft ground after snowmelt slows any job down, which is one reason we steer Chardon work toward summer and fall.
What are the cons of forestry mulching in a Geauga County woodlot?
It leaves stumps of the small stuff at ground level and all the roots in place. Honeysuckle and buckthorn resprout, so follow-up cutting or treatment is part of the deal. A mulcher is for brush and small trees, not big timber. And any machine in the woods can scuff a root flare or a trunk if the operator hurries, which is why we go slowly around the trees you marked.
What will my Chardon property look like after forestry mulching?
Like a park compared to what it was. The brush is gone, the trees you chose are standing, and the ground is covered with shredded wood that protects the soil. You can see from the house to the back line. The mulch is coarse at first and settles within a season or two. Expect green shoots from the old roots by the next summer, and plan to mow or cut them.
