Forestry Mulching in Canton, OH
Old pasture, fence rows, creek bottoms and hunting ground around Canton, taken back from brush by a tracked forestry mulcher. The mulch stays on the ground and protects the soil. Owner-operated, with free estimates.
Taking Ground Back From Brush Around Canton
Stark County farm ground does not stay open by itself. Skip the mowing on a pasture or a field edge near Canton for a few years and it comes back in autumn olive, multiflora rose, hawthorn and wild cherry, with grapevine tying it all together. Forestry mulching is the fast way to take it back. A tracked machine with a mulching head cuts brush and small trees off at the ground and shreds them where they fall.
Canton is inside our service area. Logan Earthworks is based in Farmdale, in Trumbull County, and we work in this area for landowners, farmers, hunters and builders. The business is owner-operated, so the person who looks at your ground is the owner. Jeff gives free estimates and will tell you if a different machine, like an excavator or dozer, is the better tool for part of it.
Around here we mulch old fields and pasture, fence rows, wooded lots ahead of a build, trails, and hunting ground in the hill country to the south. If the job is mostly thick brush and saplings, our brush mulching page goes deeper on that. The forestry mulching service page covers the method, and the Canton land clearing and excavation page covers the rest of what we do locally.

How the Ground Around Canton Affects the Job
Two kinds of ground in one county
The glaciers pushed into Stark County from the north and stopped. The southern part was never under ice. That is why the ground changes depending on which way you drive out of the city. North, toward Plain Township and North Canton, the land is gentler and smoothed over. South, past Canton Township, the hills get steeper and the hollows tighter. On rolling ground a mulcher makes quick work of open brush. In steeper country we plan around the slope, work the benches and ridgetops, and leave the roots in to hold the hillsides.
Creek bottoms along the Nimishillen
Nimishillen Creek and its East, Middle and West branches all run through Canton. Bottom ground along a creek grows brush fast, and it is soft. A tracked mulcher can work it when it is dry enough, and the layer of mulch it leaves helps keep bare soil from washing at the next high water. Before clearing along a creek, check with the city or the Stark Soil and Water Conservation District about any limits near the bank. Then we clear to the line you are given and leave the bank itself alone.
Fence rows, pasture and hunting ground
To the east, toward Nimishillen and Osnaburg townships, there is a lot of farm ground. Fence rows that have had decades to turn into hedgerows shade the crop, hide the wire and eat a strip of field on each side. We mulch them back to the line so the fence can be fixed or replaced. Hunters want shooting lanes, trails and openings in thick cover. The mulcher can work around a single tree, so the oaks and hickories you want to keep stay standing.

What is a fair price per acre for forestry mulching near Canton, Ohio?
A fair price is one built on your ground and not on an average. We look at how thick the brush is, how big the stems are, how steep and how wet it is, how we get the machine in, and how many acres you want done. Then you get a free estimate for the job. The cost per acre guide shows how those pieces add up. Looking is free.
How many acres can a forestry mulcher clear per day in Stark County?
On an open field with light brush, several acres in a day is realistic. A fence row is measured by length, not acres, and goes by how much wire and rock is in it. Steep hillsides and dense saplings can hold the machine to an acre or less. Ask about timing with the estimate so you can plan around planting, hay or hunting season.
What are the downsides of forestry mulching on farm ground near Canton?
Mulching cuts everything off at the surface and leaves the roots, so a field is not ready for a plow the day we finish. Stumps of small trees stay until they rot. Rose and autumn olive send up new shoots and need a mowing or two each season. The mulch can tie up the surface for a while where it is thick. For pasture, trails and hunting ground those are small trade-offs.
What is the best time of year for forestry mulching in Canton, Ohio?
For farm ground, after the crop or hay is off and before the ground turns to mud is a good window, usually late summer through fall. Winter on frozen ground is also good, and with the leaves off we can see wire and rock in a fence row. Late summer suits hunting ground, ahead of the fall seasons. Creek bottoms get done in the driest part of the year.
