Forestry Mulching in Pittsburgh, PA
Overgrown hillsides, back lots and wooded acreage in the Pittsburgh area, cleared by a tracked forestry mulcher that shreds brush where it stands. We travel to this area for mulching work. Tell us about your job and we will talk it through.
Brush Clearing on Pittsburgh's Hills
Steep ground changes everything about clearing land, and Pittsburgh is built on steep ground. Lots run up hillsides, drop into hollows and back onto slopes nobody has cut in decades. Those slopes fill with tree-of-heaven, grapevine, honeysuckle, privet and briars. Dragging all that out by hand and hauling it down a narrow street is slow work. A forestry mulcher shreds it where it stands, so nothing has to be carried off the hill.
We travel to the Pittsburgh area for land clearing, forestry mulching and site work; tell us about the job and we will talk it through. Logan Earthworks is owner-operated and based in Farmdale, in northeastern Ohio. For a travel job, size and access matter more than they do near home. A few acres of brush, a commercial lot or a long property line is the kind of work that suits the trip well. Call (330) 625-5754 or send photos, and Jeff will give you a free estimate.
The work we look at here: overgrown hillsides and back lots, brush and overgrowth mulched off land headed for sale or development, property lines, access lanes, and wooded parcels in the townships and boroughs around the city. The forestry mulching service page explains the method. Our Pittsburgh land clearing and excavation page covers the heavier work.

What Pittsburgh Ground Asks of a Mulcher
How steep is too steep
Pittsburgh has hundreds of sets of public stairways, built because so many hillsides were too steep for a street. A tracked mulcher climbs better than most machines, but it has a limit, and the limit drops when the ground is wet or covered in loose rock. We look at every slope in person. Some we mulch top to bottom. Some we work from the top and from the bottom and leave the middle. Some are too steep for any tracked machine, and you will hear that from us before you spend anything.
Slides, roots and bare dirt
Hillsides in Pittsburgh and the rest of Allegheny County are known for landslides, and bare, soaked soil does not help. Mulching has an edge here over pushing brush out with a dozer. The roots stay in the ground, and the shredded wood covers the soil. It is not a fix for an unstable slope, so ask an engineer about ground that has moved. Pennsylvania's erosion and sediment rules, Chapter 102, call for a written plan once earth disturbance reaches 5,000 square feet, and the Allegheny County Conservation District reviews those plans. Ask them what applies before a large hillside job.
Knotweed and tree-of-heaven
Two plants on Pittsburgh lots deserve a warning. Japanese knotweed should not be mowed or mulched. Pieces of stem and root can sprout, so grinding a patch can spread it across the site. If you have knotweed, show us and we will work around it. Tree-of-heaven is the other one. Cut it and the roots send up a crowd of new shoots. We can still clear it, but plan on treating or mowing the regrowth for a few seasons. Honeysuckle, privet, multiflora rose and grapevine are easier. They mulch down clean.

How much does forestry mulching cost per acre in the Pittsburgh, PA area?
Jeff prices each job after seeing the ground. Around Pittsburgh the price turns on slope first, then brush density, tree size, how the machine gets onto the lot, and how much ground there is. Because we travel for this work, a larger job spreads that cost better than a small one. See the forestry mulching cost guide for the full list of factors. Estimates are free.
How much can a forestry mulcher clear in a day on Pittsburgh hillsides?
Less than the numbers you read for flat land. On a moderate slope with thick vines and saplings, a mulcher may cover roughly an acre a day, sometimes less. Short passes, turning room and wet spots all cost time. Flat or rolling ground in the outlying townships goes faster, up to several acres a day in light brush. Ask about timing with the estimate.
When is the best time of year for forestry mulching near Pittsburgh?
On slopes, dry ground matters most, so late summer and early fall are the safest bets. Winter is good when the ground is frozen and the leaves are off, since we can see the shape of the hill and what is hiding in the brush. We avoid steep ground in a wet spring. Flat sites are more forgiving and can be done most of the year.
What are the downsides of forestry mulching a steep lot in Pittsburgh?
Some of the lot may be too steep to reach, so a strip could be left or cut by hand. Every stump and root stays where it grew. Tree-of-heaven and honeysuckle come back from the roots without follow-up. The finish is rough mulch, not a graded yard. And mulching does not make a sliding hillside stable. A geotechnical engineer is the one to ask about that.
