Forestry Mulching in Cleveland, OH

Forestry Mulching for Greater Cleveland Properties

Most acreage near Cleveland sits out in the suburbs, not in the city. Places like Strongsville, North Royalton, Brecksville and Solon still have deep wooded lots and leftover farm ground between the subdivisions. When that ground gets away from the owner, it fills with buckthorn, honeysuckle, privet and grapevine. Forestry mulching clears it with one tracked machine that shreds brush and small trees in place and leaves the mulch on the ground.

We work in the Cleveland area. Logan Earthworks is owner-operated and based in Farmdale, in Trumbull County, and Cuyahoga County is inside our service area for clearing and mulching. Jeff will talk through what you want the ground to look like, come see it, and give you a free estimate. No brush piles sit in your yard for weeks waiting on a truck.

The work that fits on this side is mostly wooded back lots that need the underbrush taken out, property lines and fence lines that have grown into a hedge, lots being readied for a new house, and invasive brush under good trees. The method is explained on our forestry mulching service page. For digging, grading and other work, see the Cleveland land clearing and excavation page.

Mulching in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County

Bluffs, ravines and creek banks

Cleveland climbs from the Lake Erie shore in a line of bluffs, and streams such as Big Creek and Euclid Creek cut ravines on their way to the lake. The Cuyahoga River does the same on a larger scale. Wooded banks like these are where brush gets thickest, and they are the last place you want bare dirt. Mulching fits because the roots stay in the ground and the shredded wood covers the soil. We work the slope the machine can safely hold and tell you where a bank is too steep to put tracks on.

Snow belt timing on the east side

The east side of Greater Cleveland sits in the Lake Erie snow belt, where lake-effect snow piles up much deeper than it does on the west side. In flatter, drier country, winter is prime mulching season because the ground is frozen and the leaves are off. Here, deep snow can hide stumps, rock and junk, so we plan east side jobs for late summer and fall or pick our days in winter. The far west side sees a good deal less snow and gives us a longer cold-weather window. Either way, we look at the ground before we promise a date.

Local rules and park boundaries

Cuyahoga County is built out, and some of its cities and villages have their own rules about removing trees or clearing near a stream. Call your building or service department before the work starts and ask. Some lots back up to Cleveland Metroparks land, where the edge of the woods is rarely the property line. Have your corners marked. We mulch to the line you show us, keep the trees you tag, and leave park ground alone. What you get back is a lot you can see through and walk across.

How much do forestry mulching companies charge per acre in the Cleveland area?

Rates vary a lot from one outfit and one property to the next, so Jeff prices each job after seeing the ground. The honest inputs are brush density, tree size, slope, access through a neighborhood, and how much ground there is. Small suburban lots are quoted by the job. How long does forestry mulching take on a wooded lot near Cleveland?

A half-acre back lot with moderate underbrush is a small job for a mulcher. Thicker growth, lots of trees to work around, steep banks or tight access between houses add time. Open acreage with light brush goes much faster, sometimes several acres in a day. Ask what to expect once Jeff has seen the site.

Is forestry mulching worth it for buckthorn and honeysuckle in Cuyahoga County?

It is the quickest way to knock them down and get your woods back in one visit. It is not a permanent cure. Both shrubs sprout again from the stump and from seed in the soil, so the regrowth needs mowing, cutting or treatment over the next couple of seasons. Stumps stay at ground level. If you go in knowing that, mulching does the heavy part and leaves you with upkeep you can handle.

What does the ground look like after forestry mulching in Cleveland?

Open and brown at first. The brush is replaced by a layer of shredded wood, thicker where the growth was heavy, with the trees you kept standing over it. Stumps of the small stuff are cut off at the surface. You can walk it and see through it as soon as the machine leaves. Over a couple of seasons the mulch breaks down, and grass and woodland plants come up through it.
