Land Clearing, Mulching & Excavation in Lawrence County

We work in Lawrence County. Logan Earthworks is based in Farmdale, in Trumbull County, Ohio, and New Castle and the townships north and west of it are inside our service area. Lawrence County borders Mahoning County on its west side, so for a lot of landowners here we are a nearby contractor who happens to have an Ohio address. The typical job is old farm ground, a wooded lot or a hillside that has filled in with brush and vines.

For that we bring a tracked forestry mulcher. One machine cuts the brush and small trees and grinds them on the spot, and the mulch stays on the soil. When a site needs stumps out, a pad built or a driveway cut in, we bring an excavator and a dozer. Our forestry mulching page explains the method, our New Castle page covers the city, and this guide lays out the downsides plainly.

Where three rivers come together

The Shenango River, Neshannock Creek and the Mahoning River all meet in this county and form the Beaver River just south of New Castle. Slippery Rock Creek cuts through the east side at McConnells Mill State Park. That is a lot of valley wall and bottom ground. On creek banks and steep sides we mulch and leave the roots, because bare soil on a slope ends up in the water. On flat bottom ground we wait for it to dry out or freeze before we bring a machine across.

Farm ground in the north end

The north end of Lawrence County, around New Wilmington, Volant and Pulaski, is farm country. An Old Order Amish community has farmed around New Wilmington since the 1840s, and there is a lot of fence. Fence rows, lane edges and woodlot margins are the usual job. We mulch them back to the line and leave the shade trees you pick. We also clear spots for barns, sheds and ponds and open up old pasture that has gone to rose and hawthorn so it can be grazed again.

Pennsylvania erosion rules and the conservation district

Pennsylvania regulates earth disturbance differently than Ohio does. DEP calls for erosion and sediment controls on any earth disturbance, a written plan once it reaches 5,000 square feet, and a permit at one acre. The Lawrence County Conservation District in New Castle runs that program locally and reviews plans. State law says to call 811 at least three business days before you dig. Check with those offices before a clearing job that involves digging. Cutting and mulching brush above ground leaves the soil in place, which is the gentlest way to open land.

Questions

Lawrence County Questions

More answers on our FAQ page and in the guides.

Do you clear land in Lawrence County, PA?

Yes. Lawrence County is inside our service area. We work in New Castle, Neshannock, Union, Pulaski, New Wilmington and the townships around them, clearing lots, mulching brush and digging out stumps for building sites. Call (330) 625-5754, describe the property, and Jeff will arrange a free estimate on site.

How much do forestry mulchers charge per hour in Lawrence County, PA?

Some contractors bill by the hour and some by the job. Jeff looks at the ground and gives you a free estimate for the job. What sets that price is how thick the growth is, the size of the trees, slope, wet ground and access. Call and he will set a time to walk your land.

Can you clear a steep wooded hillside in Lawrence County?

In many cases, yes. A tracked mulcher has the footing for slopes that would stop a tractor. Jeff checks the grade, the soil and where the runoff goes before he takes a hillside job. If any digging is planned, the Lawrence County Conservation District can tell you what erosion controls Pennsylvania requires for it.

How long does it take to clear an acre of brush in Lawrence County?

It can be part of a day or several days. Open brush on level ground is quick. Thick saplings and vines, big stems, hillsides, rock and soft bottom ground each slow the machine down. Nobody can tell you honestly without seeing it. We will walk the acre with you and give you a free estimate.
