Working in Chardon

Clearing, Mulching & Dirt Work in Chardon

Snow is the first thing people mention about Chardon. The city sits on a ridge inland from Lake Erie at about 1,240 feet and averages around 107 inches of snow a year, the most of any city in Ohio. The second thing is trees. Geauga County is mostly rural, and the land around the county seat is wooded lots and maple woods on rolling ground. Logan Earthworks clears, mulches, digs and builds drives here as inside our service area.

A typical project here starts with a wooded parcel and a plan: a house site, a pole barn, a longer back yard, a trail. Jeff, the owner, looks at each site first. We bring a tracked forestry mulcher for brush and small trees, CAT excavators for big trees, stumps and digging, and a dozer and compact track loader for grade. We also have a page just on forestry mulching in Chardon, and one for Geauga County as a whole.

Snow country sets the schedule

With that much snow, the working year in Chardon is shorter and the spring is wetter. Snowmelt keeps the ground soft well after the calendar says spring, and heavy machines on soft ground make ruts. We aim the clearing and digging at the firm months and tell you plainly if a site needs to wait. Snow load also breaks tops and brings down limbs. We take down trees that are dead, leaning or storm damaged before they land on something, and our hazard tree removal page explains how. Every tree job is different. Tell Jeff what you have and he will tell you how we can help.

Wooded lots and driveways that get plowed

Clearing a wooded lot for a house is more than dropping trees. The house site, the drive and the utility runs all need to be opened, stumps ground or pulled, and the pad cut to grade. Then there is the driveway. In Chardon it will be plowed for months, so it needs a firm stone base, a crown that sheds meltwater, culverts where water crosses, and room at the sides to push snow. A drive built thin does not last long under a plow. See lot clearing for new homes.

High ground and fast runoff

Three rivers start in Geauga County: the Cuyahoga, the Chagrin and the Grand. That tells you this is the high ground, and water leaves it in a hurry. On a cleared slope, runoff and snowmelt will cut a channel if nothing slows them. We leave mulch and roots in place where we can, shape swales to carry water across the slope, and grade pads so water goes around the building. For larger sites, Ohio EPA requires a stormwater permit at one acre or more of disturbed ground, and Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District is the local office to ask.

Who does land clearing in Chardon, Ohio?

Logan Earthworks is an owner-operated land clearing and excavation company based in Trumbull County, and Chardon is inside our service area. We clear wooded lots, mulch brush and small trees, remove larger trees and stumps, and do the grading and gravel driveway work that follows. Reach us at (330) 625-5754 or through the form. Jeff will look at the property and give you a free estimate.

How much does it cost to clear a wooded lot in Chardon?

It turns on the trees and the ground. Brush and saplings can be mulched in place, which is the least work. Mature hardwoods have to be cut, the stumps pulled or ground, and the wood dealt with, and that takes more machine time. Slope, wet spots, access from the road and how much of the lot you want opened all count. We walk it and give a free estimate.

When should I clear land in Chardon with all the snow?

Late summer through fall is the most dependable stretch, because the ground is firm and the weather holds. A cold, low-snow spell in winter can work well too, since frozen ground carries a machine. Deep snow and the spring thaw are the times to wait. If you plan to build next year, getting the clearing and the drive done the fall before saves a wet spring start.
