Yard Drainage & French Drains in Warren, OH
Trumbull County clay is slow to drain almost everywhere. If water stands in your Warren yard or creeps toward the house, we regrade, cut swales and install French drains to move it out.
Getting water off a Warren lot
A wet yard wears on you. The back corner is a swamp until June. The kids cannot use the swing set. The sump runs all night when it rains, and you have started to wonder what the water is doing to the foundation. People in Warren often live with it for years because they think the fix is a mystery. It is not. Water runs downhill, and the job is to give it a hill.
Sometimes that hill is only a few inches. Regrading builds a steady fall away from the house, so rain leaves the foundation and does not soak in beside it. A swale, which is a wide shallow channel you can mow across, collects that runoff and walks it to the low side of the lot. A lot of surface water problems end right there, with dirt work and nothing buried. We are based in Farmdale, so this is our own back yard.
When the ground itself stays saturated, we go under it. A French drain is a trench filled with clean stone around a perforated pipe, sloped to an outlet. It gives water in the soil an easy path out. We also dig and clean ditches, set culverts, and control erosion where runoff has started to cut. Our guide to standing water, grading and drainage fixes explains how we choose.

Warren and Trumbull County drainage facts
The soil that shares the county's name
The USDA describes its Trumbull soil series as poorly drained ground on the level and low parts of till plains in northeastern Ohio. The subsoil is heavy with clay, and in most years water stands from just above the surface to six inches below it between November and May. The county farmland plan lists Mahoning, Wadsworth and Venango soils here as well and points to seasonal wetness as a main limit. If your yard in Warren stays wet all winter and spring, that is how this ground behaves, and it can still be fixed.
River town, low ground
Warren was built along the Mahoning River, and the lower parts of town take water from everything above them. A drainage plan has to respect where the water is already headed. We look for the natural low line across your lot and work with it. If your property is near the river or a creek, ask the city or the county about floodplain rules before any dirt moves. For most other yards the fix is on your own lot: fall away from the house and a clear path to a proper outlet.
Local offices that can help
Two county offices are worth knowing. The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District lists drainage, erosion and flood protection among its services and gives technical guidance to residents of Trumbull County. The Trumbull County Engineer, based in Warren, publishes a drive and yard pipe policy, and its right-of-way permit covers ditch elimination and driveway culverts. So if your plan is to pipe the roadside ditch across the front of the yard, ask the Engineer first. We can do the digging once you know what pipe they want and where.

How do I fix standing water in my yard in Warren, Ohio?
Start with the surface. Most standing water comes from a yard that is flat or tilted toward the house, so regrading for steady fall and adding a swale often cures it. If the soil stays soggy even with good fall, a French drain picks up the water below ground. Jeff looks at the lot, finds the outlet and recommends the least work that will do the job.
Do French drains work in Trumbull County clay?
They work when they have fall and an outlet, and when clean stone surrounds the pipe. In heavy clay, water moves slowly through the soil to reach the drain, so a French drain alone can disappoint. We usually pair it with surface grading. Read more on our French drains and yard drainage page.
Can I pipe the ditch in front of my house in Warren or Trumbull County?
Ask the road owner before you do anything. On a county road that is the Trumbull County Engineer, whose right-of-way permit covers ditch elimination and whose office publishes a drive and yard pipe policy. On a city street ask the City of Warren, and on a state route ask ODOT. They set the pipe size and grade. We can install it to their requirements.
How much does a French drain cost in Warren, OH?
No two drains are the same job, so the price comes from your yard. Length, depth, how much stone and pipe go in, where the outlet is and how easily a machine can reach the area all change the number. Our drainage cost guide covers each one. Jeff gives free estimates after seeing the yard. Call (330) 625-5754.
