Gravel Driveways and Parking Pads in Boardman, OH

Boardman is built out, so a gravel drive here is rarely a new lane to a new house. It is a parking pad behind a 1960s ranch, a widened side drive for a camper, a lane to a back shed or a tired drive rebuilt on firm stone. Jeff builds all of those on Mahoning County clay, water first.

Gravel Driveways in Boardman

A township with no raw land left

Boardman is the largest township in Mahoning County, about 40,000 people on 24 square miles south of Youngstown. Strip development along Route 224 started around 1950, and the neighborhoods filled in behind it through the 1980s. Newer building is concentrated along South Avenue by the I-680 extension.

That means the typical lot is a finished one, with a house, a lawn, a fence, a neighbor on each side and a concrete drive to the street. Gravel work here is the work that goes on behind and beside all that: pads, extensions, lanes and repairs, done with a compact track loader that fits down a side yard and leaves the front lawn alone.

The township rule at the street

Boardman Township requires a permit for any work in its right-of-way, including replacing or widening a driveway, and its road department says the approach in that strip must be asphalt or concrete. Jeff does not pave or pour, so on a township street the mouth of the drive stays as it is or goes to a paving contractor.

Everything from the sidewalk back is a different story. A gravel pad beside the garage or a strip along the side of the house for a boat can be built in limestone on a proper base. So can a drive extended to the back of the lot. On a county road the Mahoning County Engineer issues the driveway permit, and Route 224 and Route 7 belong to ODOT. Ask the road owner before anything is cut.

The pad behind the ranch

The most common call is for a parking pad out back. Somebody has bought a camper or a trailer and there is no place to put it, or the family has more cars than the drive can hold. The lawn along the side of the house is the only route in.

Jeff strips the sod and topsoil from the footprint, cuts down to firm clay, lays fabric where the ground is soft, sets a coarse limestone base and tops it with a finer mix that packs. The pad gets a slight fall so rain runs off it and away from the house, not into the neighbor's yard. The guide to building a gravel driveway covers each layer.

Mahoning clay and the spring thaw

Boardman sits on glacial till. The Mahoning soil series that carries the county's name is somewhat poorly drained, with a seasonal water table six to twelve inches down from October through June. A thin skim of stone on that ground is mud by March.

The base is what keeps a drive out of the mud, and so is the water. Yards here flood often enough that the township, Austintown and Canfield share a stormwater district, so a pad or drive gets a swale or a drain along the low side when it needs one. Where a drive crosses a ditch, a culvert pipe sized by the road owner goes in first.

Old drives, old slabs and what comes out

Plenty of Boardman garages sit at the end of a concrete strip that has heaved into steps. Jeff breaks the old concrete out and builds the gravel drive on the base that was never under it. An old shed or garage in the way can come down in the same visit; see demolition in Boardman.

Repairs on existing gravel are the other half of the work: a soft spot cut out and rebuilt with base stone, potholes graded out rather than filled, and a flattened crown put back. Dumping more stone on a soft drive just feeds the mud.

Locates and the free estimate

Buried lines are located through OUPS (Ohio 811) before any digging, at least two working days ahead, and in a Boardman side yard the gas and cable lines run right where the pad wants to go.

Jeff drives down from Farmdale, 40 minutes, looks at the lot with you, and gives one price with the stone, the hauling and the grading in it. Estimates are free. The rest of his work in the township is on the Boardman page, and the full gravel driveway service page covers new drives and repairs across the area.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Parking pads and extensions. A camper pad out back or a widened side drive, built on base stone with a fall away from the house.
  • Lanes to back sheds. A gravel lane down the lot line so the mower and the truck stop cutting ruts in the lawn.
  • Soft spots and potholes. Cut out to firm clay, based and crowned, instead of topped with another load of loose stone.
  • Old concrete out first. Heaved strips broken up and hauled, then gravel built on the base they never had.

Boardman and the towns nearby

Boardman sits in the middle of Mahoning County, 40 minutes from Farmdale, and the same work goes on in the townships around it. Canfield to the west is long lanes on former farm ground, Austintown up by the interstate is side pads and township-road lanes, and Youngstown next door is old concrete strips coming out for gravel. The service area page lists the rest of the valley and the Pennsylvania side.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff, or read the guides.

Can I have a gravel driveway in Boardman Township?

On your own lot, yes. The township's road department says the approach inside its right-of-way has to be asphalt or concrete, and it wants a permit for any work in that strip. Jeff builds the gravel from the sidewalk back and leaves the mouth to a paving contractor. On a county road or a state route, ask that office instead.

Do I need a permit for a gravel parking pad in my back yard?

A pad on your own lot does not sit in the road right-of-way, so the road department permit does not apply. The township zoning office may have setback rules for a pad near the lot line, so a quick call there before the stone comes is worth it. Jeff can tell you what he has run into.

Why does my gravel drive turn to mud every spring?

The stone was put on topsoil or soft clay with no base. Boardman ground holds a water table close to the surface from fall to early summer, and every thaw the soil softens and swallows a little more stone. The fix is to dig out the soft material, base it with coarse stone, fabric underneath, and crown the top.

Can you get a machine into a fenced back yard?

Usually. A compact track loader fits through a gate or down a side yard that a truck never could, and tracks are easier on a lawn than wheels. A fence panel sometimes has to come out and go back. Jeff works out the way in when he looks at the lot.

Do you build the drive, or just deliver stone?

Jeff builds it. The stone is only part of the job; the stripping, base, fabric, crown and drainage are what keep it from sinking. He gives one price with the stone, hauling and grading in it. He does not pave asphalt or pour concrete.
