Gravel Driveways and Farm Lanes in Kinsman, OH
Kinsman and Farmdale are home ground for Logan Earthworks, farm townships in the northeast corner of Trumbull County where every road has a long gravel lane and an old barn at the end of it. Jeff builds new lanes, rebuilds the ones that have sunk and sets the culverts, on clay he knows in April and in August.
Gravel Driveways in Kinsman
Home ground: long lanes and old barns
Farmdale is an unincorporated community in the southwest of Kinsman Township, and the township itself holds about 1,750 people on 27 square miles. There is no village government out here, just the trustees, and most of the land is farm, pasture and woods. Routes 5 and 7 cross at Kinsman.
Nearly every house sits back from the road at the end of a gravel lane, and the lanes carry grain trucks, milk trucks and equipment as well as the family car. That is the work here: new lanes to houses on split-off farm lots, lanes rebuilt after fifty years of stone dumped on sod, and farm roads out to a back field or a barn.
Clay that is one thing in April and another in August
The ground is the same glacial till as the rest of the county. In August it is hard enough to drive a truck across a field. In April it will swallow the same truck to the axles. A lane that was fine all summer goes soft in the spring thaw, and the stone goes down into it.
So Jeff builds for April. Topsoil off to firm subsoil, fabric where the clay is soft, a thick base of large angular limestone that spreads the load, and a top course that packs. A crown sends water off both sides into shallow ditches that actually fall somewhere. Low ground along Pymatuning Creek, which runs down this corner of the county, gets a culvert rather than fill across a wet draw.
Built for the grain truck, not the car
A farm lane fails at the gate, the turn and the low spot, because that is where the loaded truck stops, turns and sinks. Jeff widens the turns so a semi or a tractor with a wagon can swing without dropping a wheel off the edge, and puts the heaviest base where the heaviest load stops.
A lane out to a back field is built the same way but lighter where only a tractor uses it. If the route is grown shut with multiflora rose and hawthorn, it gets mulched first; the Kinsman and Farmdale page covers that side of the work.
Routes 5 and 7, the township and the county
The permit for a new lane is about where it meets the road. Kinsman Township trustees handle township roads. The Trumbull County Engineer handles driveway access and the culvert on county roads under its right-of-way permit. State Routes 5 and 7 are ODOT's, and a new mouth on one of those starts with the local ODOT garage.
The road owner sets the pipe size and where the mouth can sit for sight lines. Jeff sets the culvert to the grade of the ditch and builds over it. Buried lines are marked through OUPS (Ohio 811) at least two working days ahead, and out here that means the gas line along the road and the water line to the barn.
A lane that can be plowed
A long lane in Kinsman has to be plowed four months of the year. A lane with no crown, soft shoulders and a culvert nobody can find under the snow is a lane that gets wrecked by the plow. Jeff builds the lane with that in mind: firm edges, markers at the pipe and a surface the blade can ride without digging in.
He plows long drives in this part of the county through the winter as well; see snow removal in Trumbull County. The guide to getting a long driveway ready for snow covers what to do before the first storm.
A neighbor's price
Jeff is based in Farmdale, so looking at a lane in Kinsman, Farmdale, Gustavus or Vernon is not a trip. He walks the route with you, looks at the ditch and the low spots, and gives one figure with the stripping, base, top stone, culvert and grading in it. Estimates are free.
He does not pave. If the lane needs brush cleared or a culvert replaced, that goes into the same figure. The full gravel driveway service page covers drives, farm lanes and repairs across northeast Ohio, and the gravel driveway cost guide explains what you are paying for.

Call nowWhat that covers
- Farm lanes and field roads. Built for the grain truck and the wagon, with wide turns and the heaviest base where the load stops.
- New lanes on split lots. A drive from the road back to a new house or pole barn, routed on the high ground.
- Culverts at the road. The pipe ODOT, the county or the township calls for, set at ditch grade and built over.
- Sunk lanes rebuilt. Fifty years of stone on sod dug out, based, crowned and ditched so it stays up.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff, or read the guides.
Do I need a permit for a driveway on Route 5 or 7 in Kinsman?
Yes. Those are state routes, and ODOT requires a permit before a driveway is installed in its right-of-way, including the culvert and ditch work. Start with the local ODOT garage. On a township road ask the Kinsman Township trustees, and on a county road the Trumbull County Engineer.
Can you build a lane a semi can use?
Yes. It takes a thicker base of large angular stone, wider turns so the trailer does not drop a wheel off the edge, and extra base at the gate and wherever the truck stops. Jeff asks what will travel on the lane before he plans the layers, and builds for the heaviest regular load.
Why does my lane sink every spring?
Because the stone sits on topsoil or soft clay with no base. Kinsman ground holds water close to the surface through the thaw, the soil softens and traffic pushes the stone into it. Adding more stone feeds the mud. The fix is to dig out the soft sections, lay fabric and base stone, and crown the top.
Do you plow the lanes you build?
Yes. Jeff plows long drives and lanes in this part of Trumbull County through the winter. A lane built with a crown, firm edges and a marked culvert plows clean; one without them loses stone to the blade every storm. See the snow removal page for the service.
How far from Farmdale will you go?
Across Trumbull and Mahoning counties, into Mercer County on the Pennsylvania side and farther for a job that is worth the trip. Kinsman, Farmdale and the townships around them are the closest ground there is, so a short lane or a single culvert here is no trouble.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
