Gravel Driveways and Parking Pads in Niles, OH
Niles is a mill town on flat ground where Mosquito Creek meets the Mahoning River, and its driveways are mostly old concrete on narrow lots. When one cracks past patching, or a rear lot needs parking it never had, Jeff builds gravel: topsoil off, stone base, packed limestone top, crowned so the water leaves.
Gravel Driveways in Niles
A mill town's driveways, poured long ago
Niles peaked at about 23,000 people in 1980 and has lost ground every census since, so nobody is building many new streets. The houses are the ones that were here when the mills ran: close-set lots, a detached garage at the back, a single strip of concrete beside the house or a gravel alley behind it.
That concrete is sixty or more years old. On clay that heaves every winter it has cracked into slabs that tip and catch the plow. Jeff's gravel driveway work in Niles is mostly replacement: the old drive out, the base rebuilt, crushed limestone in its place. He breaks out and hauls the concrete as the first step of the same job.
Flat ground that keeps its water
The city sits on the low ground along two streams, and the 1913 flood is still part of its history. Away from the river the lots are flat clay, and a flat drive on flat clay has no way to shed rain. The puddles settle in the wheel tracks and each tire pumps a little more stone into the mud.
So the build matters more than the stone. Jeff strips the topsoil to firm subsoil, lays fabric where the clay is soft, and sets a base of large angular stone. On top goes a limestone mix that packs, shaped with a crown so water runs to the edges. On a lot with nowhere for that water to go, a shallow swale or a drain along the drive finishes the job.
Rear lots, garages and parking pads
A lot of Niles calls are not for a drive to the street at all. They are for a pad beside the garage, or a spot off the alley for a second vehicle or a camper. Or a lane back to where an old garage was taken down and the space is finally usable.
A parking pad is built the same way as a drive, just wider and flatter, with enough fall to one side that it does not hold a sheet of water. The compact track loader fits down a side yard that a dump truck cannot, so the stone goes in a bucket at a time where it has to. Ruts in the lawn get knocked down before the machine leaves.
Stone from Ohio quarries: 304, 411 and 57
Ohio quarries sell crushed limestone under ODOT item names. A 304 base mix has large angular pieces and fines that lock together under load. A 411 mix is finer and packs into a tight top surface. Number 57 is clean, washed stone with no fines, good around a drain pipe and poor on top of a drive because it never locks up.
Round river gravel looks tidy in a bag and rolls under tires. For a Niles drive on clay, angular limestone with fines is what stays put. The gravel driveway cost guide explains how the stone, the base and the machine time add up to the price.
Who owns the road out front, OUPS and the floodplain
Where a drive meets a city street, the apron sits in the City of Niles right-of-way, and the city is the office to ask. Part of Niles lies in Weathersfield Township and part in Howland, and township roads are the township's call. State Route 46 and U.S. 422 are ODOT's, and the Trumbull County Engineer handles driveway access and culverts on county roads.
Before anything is cut, buried lines are located through OUPS (Ohio 811) at least two working days ahead. If the lot is near the creek or the river, ask the city about floodplain rules before fill is brought in. The Niles page covers the rest of Jeff's work in town.
The estimate, and what Jeff does not do
Jeff comes down from Farmdale, 25 minutes, looks at the drive and the ground under it, and gives one figure with the tear-out, stone, hauling and grading in it. Estimates are free. He does not pour concrete or pave asphalt, so if the plan is a paved drive he will say so and step aside. If a garage or shed has to come down first, that goes in the same figure.
The full gravel driveway installation and repair page describes new drives, farm lanes and the repair of ruts, potholes, soft spots and washouts across the whole area.

What that covers
- Old concrete out, gravel in. The cracked strip broken out and hauled, then a crowned limestone drive built on a real base.
- Rear parking pads. A spot off the alley or beside the garage for a second car, a trailer or a camper.
- Ruts and potholes rebuilt. Soft sections dug out to firm ground and based, not topped with more loose stone.
- Culverts and approaches. The pipe at the ditch set to grade and the mouth built to whatever the road owner requires.

Niles is between Warren and Youngstown, 25 minutes from Farmdale, and the same gravel drives are built in both. Warren to the north has the same old concrete strips coming out and newer houses in the townships around it. Youngstown to the south has thousands of narrow lots with garages at the back. Hubbard, out toward the state line, has township lanes as well as in-town drives. The service area page lists every town Logan Earthworks covers.

Can you replace a cracked concrete driveway in Niles with gravel?
Yes, and it is the most common driveway call from Niles. Jeff breaks the concrete out, hauls it off, digs out whatever soft ground was under it, and builds a gravel drive on a proper stone base with a crown. It is one job with one price, tear-out included.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway apron in Niles?
Ask whoever owns the road. On a city street that is the City of Niles. On Route 46 or U.S. 422 it is ODOT. On a county road the Trumbull County Engineer issues a right-of-way permit for driveway access and culverts, and township roads belong to Weathersfield or Howland Township. The road owner decides the mouth and the pipe.
What gravel is best for a driveway on Niles clay?
Angular crushed limestone with fines, sold by Ohio quarries under names like 304 for the base and 411 for the top. The fines fill the gaps and the layer packs hard. Washed 57 stone and round river gravel stay loose and roll under tires, so they belong around a drain pipe, not on the surface.
Will a gravel drive hold up on a lot near the river?
If it is built above the ground beside it, with a crown and somewhere for water to go, yes. The base has to be thick enough to bridge soft ground. If the lot is in the mapped floodplain, check with the City of Niles before fill is brought in, because fill there can be regulated.
Can you fix just the soft spot by the garage?
Yes. A soft spot is dug out to firm ground, filled with base stone and blended into the rest of the drive, and the crown is put back so water stops collecting there. Dumping loose stone in the hole is what most people have already tried, and it keeps sinking.

Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
