Concrete Removal and Slab Tear-Out in Youngstown, OH
Youngstown has more concrete than it has houses to go with it. Garages came down and the slabs stayed. Driveways run to nothing. Jeff breaks out the slab, the drive, the patio or the footings, hauls the pieces away and grades the ground so it can be mowed, graveled or built on. He does not pour new concrete.
Concrete Removal in Youngstown
A city that shrank and left its concrete behind
Youngstown had about 170,000 people in 1930 and has around 60,000 now. Whole blocks on the east and south sides have been cleared of houses, and the county land bank has been passing empty lots to the neighbors next door. What the house left behind is usually concrete.
There is a garage slab at the back of the lot, a strip of driveway between two foundations, a front walk and a set of steps that climb to nothing. Buy the side lot and that is what you own. The calls Jeff gets in Youngstown are mostly about getting that concrete out so the lot can be a yard.
The garage slab on a side lot
The most common job in the city is a detached garage slab, often with a course or two of block still standing on it. A slab like that is thicker around the edge than in the middle, and the footing runs below grade all the way round. It is heavier than it looks and it does not come out with a sledgehammer.
The excavator breaks the field, pulls the edge and digs the footing out rather than leaving it buried. If the garage is still standing, demolition in Youngstown covers taking it down first, and the slab goes on the same trip.
Narrow drives between close houses
Youngstown lots are narrow, and the driveway often runs within a few feet of the neighbor's wall. A machine has to get in and out through that gap without touching either house or the sidewalk. Tracked machines spread their weight, and the route in gets looked at before the job is priced.
An old city drive is thin and cracked into plates, so it breaks quickly once it is lifted. The pieces are loaded and hauled. If a gravel drive is going back in its place, the base can go in on the same visit. See gravel driveways in Youngstown.
What is under the slab: Mahoning clay
The USDA describes the Mahoning soil series, named for the county, as glacial till with a tight clay subsoil and a water table that sits six to twelve inches down from October through June. Pull a slab out of ground like that and leave the hole, and the hole fills with water.
So the hole gets filled and compacted, and the ground is shaped with fall away from any building still standing. If the yard already holds water, that gets sorted at the same time. Yard drainage in Youngstown covers swales, regrading and French drains on the same ground.
OHIO811, gas lines and the public sidewalk
Ohio law requires notice to OHIO811 before digging, and a concrete tear-out counts, because the bucket goes below the slab. In older Youngstown neighborhoods the gas service often runs under the drive, so the marks matter. Call 811 before you dig explains how the locate works in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The sidewalk and the apron where the drive meets the street sit in the public right-of-way. Concrete on your own lot is yours to remove, but ask the city before anything is cut at the curb line. Private lines, like power to a garage that is gone, are not marked by 811 and get found the careful way.
Afterwards, and one price for the whole job
When the concrete is gone, the ground is filled, graded and left ready to seed, gravel or build on. Jeff does not pour new concrete, so if a new slab is the plan, the tear-out and the grade are his part and a concrete crew takes it from there.
He comes out, looks at the slab and the way in, and gives one figure with the breaking, loading, hauling and grading in it. The concrete removal page covers how the work goes across the area, and the Youngstown page has the rest of what he does in the city.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff, or read the guides.
Do you remove the slab from a garage that is already gone?
Yes. That is the most common concrete job in Youngstown. The slab is broken up with the excavator, the thickened edge and the footing are dug out rather than left in the ground, and any block still standing on it goes too. The hole is filled, compacted and graded so the lot can be mowed.
Can a machine fit down a Youngstown driveway?
Usually. City drives are narrow and close to the neighbor's house, so the route in is the first thing that gets looked at. Tracked machines spread their weight and turn in a small space. If a fence or a tree is in the way, that gets talked through before a date is set, not on the morning of the job.
Do I need a permit to take out a driveway or patio in Youngstown?
For concrete on your own lot, usually not, but the sidewalk and the apron at the street are in the public right-of-way, and the city has a say there. Ask the city before anything is cut at the curb line. If the concrete is under a standing garage, the demolition itself may need a permit.
Will you pour a new driveway after the old one comes out?
No. Logan Earthworks breaks out and hauls concrete and grades the ground back, and does not pour new concrete. If you want a new slab, the tear-out and the base are Jeff's part, and a concrete crew pours. If you want gravel instead, he builds the drive on the same visit.
Where does the broken concrete go?
It is loaded and hauled off the property. Clean concrete can often be recycled as crushed base, so it does not have to go to a landfill. The hauling is in the one figure you get, along with the breaking and the grading, so there is no separate bill for it.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
