Yard Drainage and French Drains in Hubbard, OH
Hubbard sits in the corner of Trumbull County against the Pennsylvania line, with two small streams running through the city and farm townships on every other side. In-town lots pond beside the house. Township parcels have ditches that stopped working years ago. Jeff regrades, cuts swales and lays drains for both.
Yard Drainage in Hubbard
Two runs, an old town and a state line
Coal and iron built Hubbard in the 1800s, and the older streets near the center still have the close lots and deep back yards of that time. Mud Run and Little Yankee Run both flow through the city limits, so a good many of those back yards end at a low, wet strip along a stream.
Outside the city, Hubbard Township is wooded acreage, old fields and long drives, with Route 7 and Interstate 80 meeting in the middle. The township touches Hermitage on one corner, and plenty of people here own ground in one state and live in the other. The water does not care about the line, but the rules do.
Lots that back onto Mud Run or Little Yankee Run
A yard that ends at a stream has an outlet, which is more than most yards can say. The trouble is the ground between: a low, flat strip that holds water because it has no fall toward the run, and brush that has grown up because the mower will not go there.
The fix is a swale shaped across that strip so water moves to the run instead of sitting beside it, and the brush taken off so the ground can be mowed. Dirt and brush stay out of the channel. Work in or right beside the stream itself can need approval, so the Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District gets asked before anything is done at the bank.
In-town yards: grade and buried downspouts
On the streets away from the runs, the Hubbard call is the usual one for this county. The lot is flat, the clay is tight, and the yard tilts a little toward the house. Rain stands at the back door and the basement wall never quite dries.
Jeff regrades the ground to fall away from the house, buries the downspout lines and runs them to daylight or a catch basin, and adds a shallow swale along the low side to carry it all to the street ditch or the back line. A French drain in clean stone goes under the strip that stays soaked after that, and only there.
Township parcels: ditches, culverts and long drives
Out in the township the water problems are bigger and simpler. A roadside ditch has silted shut. A culvert under the drive crushed or filled and now the lane floods at the road. A field swale was plowed flat decades ago and the low end of the parcel has turned to cattails.
The excavator digs and cleans ditches, sets new culverts to grade, and reshapes the swales so the parcel sheds water again. Culvert installation covers the drive crossing, and gravel driveways in Hubbard covers rebuilding a lane that has been washing out. A drive onto a county road goes through the Trumbull County Engineer first.
Locates and permits on both sides of the line
In Ohio, the law requires notice to OHIO811 at least two working days before digging. Across the line, Pennsylvania One Call asks for three to ten business days. If your ground straddles the line, or your outlet is on the far side of it, both calls go in. Jeff works both sides and sorts out which rules apply before the date is set.
The City of Hubbard's zoning office at 220 West Liberty Street requires permits for new driveways and sheds, which can matter if the drainage fix includes either one. The 811 guide covers the locate rules in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Thirty minutes from Farmdale
Hubbard is close to home, so a small job here is fine. Jeff walks the yard or the parcel with you, finds where the water comes from and where it can go, and recommends the least work that will fix it. One free figure covers the digging, pipe, stone and grading.
An old shed or barn sitting in the wet corner can come out the same day under demolition in Hubbard. The drainage page explains the methods in general, and the Hubbard page has the rest of what he does in this corner of the county.

Call nowWhat that covers
- Stream-side swales. Low back yards along Mud Run and Little Yankee Run shaped so water reaches the run.
- Regrading in town. Yards reshaped to fall away from the house, with downspouts buried and run to daylight.
- Ditches and culverts. Township ditches dug out and drive culverts set to grade so the lane stops flooding.
- French drains. Stone and pipe under the strip that stays soaked after the grade is fixed.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (330) 625-5754 and ask Jeff, or read the guides.
My back yard in Hubbard ends at Mud Run and it is always wet. What can be done?
The stream is your outlet, so the fix is on the strip between it and the house. A swale shaped across that low ground lets water move to the run instead of sitting, and the brush comes off so it can be mowed. Anything at the bank itself gets checked with the Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District first.
Who do I call before digging in Hubbard?
OHIO811, at least two working days ahead, and it is the law in Ohio. If any part of the job is on the Pennsylvania side, Pennsylvania One Call as well, which asks for three to ten business days. Jeff puts the calls in as part of scheduling. Private lines, like a pipe to a barn, are not marked and get found carefully.
The culvert under my township drive is crushed. Is that your job?
Yes. The old pipe comes out, a new one is set to grade, bedded, backfilled and stoned over, and the ditch on either side is cleaned so it actually flows. If the drive meets a county road, the Trumbull County Engineer has a say in the pipe size and placement, so that question goes in first.
Does Hubbard require a permit for drainage work?
Not for grading, swales or a drain on your own lot. The city's zoning office at 220 West Liberty Street does require permits for new driveways and sheds, so if the drainage fix includes a new drive or moving a shed out of the wet corner, that gets asked about. Outside the city, the township is the office to ask.
I live in Ohio but my lot runs into Pennsylvania. Which rules apply?
Both, depending on where the digging happens. The Ohio side follows OHIO811 and Ohio offices, the Pennsylvania side follows Pennsylvania One Call and Mercer County. Logan Earthworks works both sides of the line and sorts out which set applies to each part of the job before the date is set.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
