Clearing, Mulching & Dirt Work in Salem

Quakers founded Salem in 1806, and the country around it is still working farmland. The city sits in Perry Township at the north edge of Columbiana County, and a small piece of it reaches into Mahoning County. Head out any road and you are soon into pasture, corn ground, wood lots and fence rows. That is the kind of land Logan Earthworks works on. Salem is inside our service area, and estimates are free.

The usual problems here are familiar ones. A pasture corner has gone to multiflora rose. A fence row is now a hedge of autumn olive and grapevine. A new house or barn needs a site cut into a slope, and a lane to reach it. We bring a tracked forestry mulcher, CAT excavators, a dozer and a compact track loader. The business is owner-operated, and you talk to Jeff. More on the surrounding townships at land clearing in Columbiana County.

Farm ground on every side

Fence rows and field edges creep inward a little every year until a pass or two of the planter is lost. A forestry mulcher takes them back to the wire, or to the line you choose, and leaves the mulch where it falls. It also reclaims pasture that has gone to brush without tearing up the sod the way a dozer does. A tractor brush hog is fine for grass and weeds. Once stems get woody and thick, it takes a mulcher. See fence line and property line clearing for more.

Rolling ground and running water

At about 1,280 feet, Salem sits higher than the river towns of the Mahoning Valley to the north, and the ground around it rolls. On a slope, water is the first thing to plan for. A building site gets cut so runoff goes around it, not through it. A lane gets a crown, side ditches and a culvert at every low crossing, or the first hard storm takes the gravel downhill. Bare cuts are shaped so they do not wash. That is grading and erosion control, and it is easier done once than repaired twice.

Two counties and several road owners

Because Salem touches both Columbiana and Mahoning counties, the first question on a driveway or a larger site is which side of the line you are on. Each county has its own engineer and its own Soil and Water Conservation District. U.S. Route 62 and State Routes 9, 14, 173 and 344 all come through, and ODOT requires a permit for driveway access on a state route. Before digging anywhere, Ohio law requires notice to OHIO811 at least 2 working days ahead. We will help you sort out who to call.

Do you travel to Salem, Ohio for land clearing?

Yes. Logan Earthworks is based in Trumbull County, and Salem and the north end of Columbiana County are inside our service area. We clear brush and small trees with a forestry mulcher, take out larger trees and stumps with an excavator, and do the grading and gravel work that follows. Tell us about the property at (330) 625-5754 and we will set a time to look at it.

What is the difference between brush hogging and forestry mulching on a Salem farm?

A brush hog is a tractor mower. It cuts grass, weeds and light brush and leaves the pieces. A forestry mulcher is a tracked machine with a drum of teeth that grinds woody brush and small trees down to the ground. If you can mow it, mow it. If it has turned to saplings, rose and olive, it takes a mulcher. Not sure which one your field needs? Jeff will look at it and tell you.

When is a good time to clear land around Salem, OH?

Any time the ground will carry a machine. Late summer and fall are usually dry and firm. Winter works well when the ground is frozen and the leaves are off, because you can see the lay of the land. Spring is the hard season, with soft ground and ruts. Call ahead of the season you want so the timing can be worked out.
