Clearing, Mulching & Dirt Work in Jefferson

County seat of the largest county in Ohio by area, Jefferson is a small village with a lot of country around it. Mill Creek is the main stream through town. Past the last houses, Jefferson Township is old fields, wood lots, fence rows and long lanes, and much of it sits on ground that drains slowly. Logan Earthworks is based in Trumbull County, and Jefferson is inside our service area. We clear, mulch, dig, drain and build gravel drives.

Jeff owns the business, and he looks at the site with you. Our tracked forestry mulcher handles brush and small trees, the CAT excavators handle stumps and digging, and a dozer and compact track loader finish the grade. We like to see a property before we talk numbers, and the estimate is free. If your land is nearer Rock Creek, Austinburg, Dorset or Lenox, the same goes. Our Ashtabula County land clearing page covers the whole county.

The textbook Platea soil is just up the road

USDA soil scientists use a spot just north of Jefferson, in Jefferson Township, as the reference location for the Platea soil series. They describe it as glacial till, somewhat poorly drained, with a dense fragipan layer not far down and a perched water table within a foot of the surface from October to June. If you own land here, you already know what that means. Water sits. So every pad, yard and drive we build starts with where the water goes: grade, swales, drain pipe to an outlet. See drainage solutions.

Snowbelt seasons

Ashtabula County is part of the Lake Erie snowbelt, and winter decides a lot of the schedule. Deep snow stops some work. A cold spell with frozen ground and little snow is a good window for mulching wet woods. Then comes thaw, when soft ground rules out heavy machines for a while. If you want a site cleared and a drive in before you build, call a season ahead so the clearing can be done when the ground is right. Heavy, wet snow also breaks trees, and we take down the damaged and leaning ones. See hazard tree removal.

Old fields, wood lots and covered bridge roads

Around Jefferson, a field left alone for a few seasons comes back in briars, rose and saplings. A forestry mulcher resets it and leaves mulch on the ground, with nothing to pile or burn. It also cleans up a wood lot understory so you can walk it or run a trail. One local wrinkle: Ashtabula County is known for its covered bridges, and a truck hauling an excavator cannot use most of them. Tell us how you get to your place when you call. See brush mulching and overgrowth clearing.

Questions

Jefferson Questions

Do you do land clearing in Jefferson, Ohio and Jefferson Township?

Yes. Logan Earthworks is based in Trumbull County, and Jefferson is inside our service area in Ashtabula County. We clear brush and small trees with a forestry mulcher, remove larger trees and stumps with an excavator, and follow with grading, drainage and gravel work if you need it. Call (330) 625-5754 or send the form to set up a free estimate.

Why does my yard in Jefferson, Ohio stay wet into summer?

Mostly the soil. Much of the ground here is glacial till with a dense layer below the topsoil that water cannot get through quickly, so it perches near the surface for months. Flat lots make it worse. The fix is to move water sideways: regrade for fall, add swales, and install drain pipe that leads to a ditch or other outlet. We look at the yard and lay out a plan.

Can you forestry mulch around Jefferson, Ohio in the winter?

Often, yes. Around Jefferson the ground stays wet much of the year, so a hard freeze is one of the better windows. Frozen soil lets a tracked mulcher work wet woods and field edges that would rut in spring. With leaves down, stumps, wire and rocks are easier to see, and so are the trees you want kept. Deep lake-effect snow is the limit, because it hides hazards. Call and we will tell you plainly whether to go now or wait.
